Tees valley external connections Road
infrastructure
  • Simple strategic network A1, A19 and A66
  • Relatively un-congested few hotspots
  • Not seen as a priority by DfT (except A1
    Gateshead Western bypass)
  • DfT focus is A1/M1 congestion south of Leeds
  • Commitments to A1 (North Yorkshire upgrades
    welcome
  • RFA current commitment toward A19 junction
    improvements

9
Tees Valley external connections Rail network
  • Tees Valley as a primary manufacturing / process
location inherited rail infrastructure but needs
    upgrading
  • ECML vital to the Region but service / capacity
    issues
  • Some commitments to improvements (Network Rail
CP4) in advance of the Intercity Express
programme but need to influence CP5 (2014 2019)
  • Scope for significant improvements (capacity,
    signalling, services)
  • Gauge enhancement to W12 an opportunity and
    modest cost
  • High Speed agenda some issues to tackle
  • Support for a HSR national network
  • Should be part of a National Rail Strategy
    including the classic network
  • High Speed Rail connection vital to the regional
    economy
  • Proposals will impact on economic geography of
    the UK
