  • Incompatible hardware (especially in desktop
    machines)

Incompatible Hardware
  • Although the list of supported hardware in XP SP2
    is enormous, there are still devices that arent
    officially supported.
  • To fix these, go to the manufacturers website
    and download new drivers and install them
    immediately after the SP2 upgrade.
  • Upgrade the BIOS BEFORE upgrading!
  • Check printer websites printers are notorious
    for breaking after a Windows XP SP2 installation.

Loss of Network Connectivity
  • The Windows XP SP2 firewall is on by default and
    can cause problems with various network settings
    and configurations.
  • Disable and re-enable your network adapter.
  • In a corporate environment, use Group Policy to
    disable the firewall or open certain ports as

  • Some XP SP2 users have mentioned problems with
    wireless connections not connecting and
    performing poorly.
  • Update firmware for your access point and
    wireless card. Check software (if any) website
    for updates.

  • CD/DVD burning applications, audio applications,
    and many older applications will not run in
    Windows XP by default.
  • If an upgrade is available, install it. If not,
    create a shortcut, right-click it, go to
    Properties, and try to run it in XP Compatibility
    mode.

Total Computer Failure
  • Its very possible that your computer simply
    doesnt like XP SP2. This may lead to blue
    screens of death, freezes, and other symptoms
    which will prevent you from enjoying your
    computer.
  • Update all of your major software BEFORE you
    upgrade.
  • Update your BIOS before you upgrade.
  • Create a recovery disc BEFORE you upgrade.
