3
Motivation
  • Customer Demand Response Participation
  • The value of this mechanism has been summarized
by the Peak Load Management Alliance as having
the following impacts on both providers and
    customers/consumers
  • Reducing suppliers and customers risk in the
    market
  • Reliability of the electricity system
  • Reducing costs associated with generation,
    transmission, and distribution
  • Creating efficient markets
  • Reducing environmental impact by reducing or
    delaying new power plant developments

Potential View of the Smart Grid
6
Smart Grid Definition
  • A Smart grid system is any two-way
    communications system and associated equipment
and software, including equipment installed on
the electrical delivery system and on the
premises of retail end-use customers, that
utilizes the electrical delivery system to
    provide real-time monitoring, diagnostic, and
    control information
  • California Senate Bill No. 1438
  • Introduced by Senator Padilla on February 21st,
    2008

7
Smart Grid Network Model
8
Communication Requirements (ANSI C12.22)
  • Initially, communications with electronic devices
consisted of transporting memory data via
proprietary protocols which were unique to each
manufacturer. The desire for interoperability and
support for multiple manufacturers by reading and
programming systems created a need for
standardization of data formats and transport
    protocols.
  • This standard extends upon the concepts of the
ANSI C12.18 Protocol Specification for ANSI Type
2 Optical Port, ANSI C12.19 Utility Industry
End Device Data Tables, and ANSI C12.21
    Protocol Specification for Telephone Modem
Communication standards to allow transport of
table data over any reliable networking
    communications system.

9
Components of Smart Grid Distribution System
10
Home Area Network (HAN)
  • Each demand response enabled appliance will be a
    hybrid sensor/actuator device
  • Each device provides a power measurement to the
    meter
  • Meter is an actuator that sends control signals
to devices based on measurement and pricing
    information provided by utility

11
Home Area Network (HAN)
12
Neighborhood Area Network (NAN)
  • From the NAN point of view, each meter is a
    hybrid sensor/actor
  • Each access point logically coupled with a local
control switch for a subset of houses is an actor
  • Currently FPL (Florida Power Lighting) has a
deployment of roughly 5000 AMI smart meters per
    access point
  • GE kV2c meter
  • Silver Springs NIC equipped with Zigbee Pro
    platform

Conclusion/Looking Forward
  • Determine how to anonymize customer data as it
    traverses the NAN
  • Incorporate these criteria with the ANSI C12.22
standard to create a secure HAN and NAN
    communication protocol
