Title: Divorce
1Divorce Remarriage
- Is Gods Law Really THAT Strict?
2Genesis 224
- For this reason a man shall leave his father and
his mother, and be joined to his wife and they
shall become one flesh.
3Matthew 196
- So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What
therefore God has joined together, let no man
separate.
4Malachi 216
- For I hate divorce, says the LORD, the God of
Israel, and him who covers his garment with
wrong, says the LORD of hosts. So take heed to
your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously.
5Mark 1011-12
- So He said to them, Whoever divorces his wife
and marries another commits adultery against
her. And if a woman divorces her husband and
marries another, she commits adultery.
6Luke 1618
- Whoever divorces his wife and marries another
commits adultery and whoever marries her who is
divorced from her husband commits adultery.
7Romans 72-3
- For the woman who has a husband is bound by the
law to her husband as long as he lives. But if
the husband dies, she is released from the law
of her husband. So then if, while her husband
lives, she marries another man, she will be
called an adulteress but if her husband dies,
she is free from that law, so that she is no
adulteress, though she has married another man.
81 Corinthians 739
- A wife is bound by law as long as her husband
lives but if her husband dies, she is at liberty
to be married to whom she wishes, only in the
Lord.
91 Corinthians 710-11
- Now to the married I command, yet not I but the
Lord A wife is not to depart from her
husband. But even if she does depart, let her
remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband.
And a husband is not to divorce his wife.
10Matthew 532
- But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife
for any reason except sexual immorality causes
her to commit adultery and whoever marries a
woman who is divorced commits adultery.
11Matthew 199
- And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife,
except for sexual immorality, and marries
another, commits adultery and whoever marries
her who is divorced commits adultery.
12GOD Speaks On Divorce
- Genesis 224 Cleave, One Flesh
- Malachi 216 God Hates Divorce
- Matthew 196 Dont Put Asunder
- Mark 1011-12 Dont Divorce
- Luke 1618 Dont Divorce
- Romans 72-3 Bound By Law
- 1 Corinthians 739 Bound by Law
- 1 Corinthians 710-11 Dont Depart
- Matthew 532 199 One Exception Sexual
Immorality
One Woman For One Man For LIFE! (1 Corinthians
72)
13GOD Speaks On Remarriage
- Mark 1011-12 None
- Luke 1618 None
- 1 Corinthians 710-11 None
- Romans 72-3 Upon Death
- 1 Corinthians 739 Upon Death
- Matthew 199 Upon Fornication
Remarriage Makes One An Adulterer Unless Ones
Spouse Is Dead Or One Divorced His Spouse For
Fornication.
14Gods Plain Teaching
- Who can marry / re-marry?
- One who has never married before.
- One whose spouse has died.
- One who has divorced their former spouse for
fornication. - Any other situation is wrong according to
scripture.
15Divorce Has Serious Consequences
- Unlawful divorce always places both partners in a
predicament. In 1 Cor. 710-11, Paul repeated
what Jesus plainly taught on divorce and
remarriage - Now to the married I command, yet not I but the
Lord A wife is not to depart from her
husband. But even if she does depart, let her
remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband.
And a husband is not to divorce his wife.
16Divorce Has Serious Consequences
- Couples are commanded not to divorce. Should a
marriage break up unlawfully - both are to remain unmarried or else be
reconciled to one another. - Their divorce is contrary to Gods will, and
neither of the two is eligible to marry someone
else.
17Plain Teaching Challenged
- This position is TOO STRICT!
- This position MAKES GOD UNFAIR!
- This position IS UNFORGIVING!
- This position MUST BE WRONG!
- THERE MUST BE ANOTHERINTERPRETATION!
18MAN Speaks On Remarriage
- ALL people can ALWAYS remarry...adultery defined
as a one-time sin - ALL non-Christians can remarry...not under
Christ's law until baptized...baptism washes
away marriages - the Guilty Party can remarry
- believers divorced by unbelievers can remarry
- those who are unscripturally divorced can remarry
later on if their ex commits adultery
Let God Be True And Every Man A Liar!
19Unfair?
- Why should those who werent even Christians yet
and were ignorant of Gods will when they
married and divorced suffer severe consequences
for life?
ITS NOT FAIR! THE DOCTRINE MUST BE WRONG!
20False Doctrines
- False Doctrine Christs marriage laws DO NOT
apply to non-Christians. - This solves the problem for people who divorced
and remarried before they became Christians. No
matter how many divorces they have had, they can
stay with their present mate when they become a
Christian.
21Sound Doctrine
- Christs laws on divorce and remarriage DO apply
to non-Christians. - Matt. 2818-19 All authority has been given to
Me in heaven and on earth - Eph. 121-23 above all rule and authority and
power put all things in subjection - 1 Cor. 69 nor adulterers shall inherit the
kingdom of God. Such were some of you - Mark 616-18 why was it not lawful for King
Herod to be married to Herodias, his brother
Philips wife?
22Unfair?
- Why should the guilty spouse who later repents
suffer severe consequences for life?
ITS NOT FAIR! THE DOCTRINE MUST BE WRONG!
23False Doctrines
- False Doctrine If the innocent one is loosed the
guilty one is loosed. - This solves the problem for the fornicator who is
divorced lawfully by the innocent spouse. Since
she is no longer bound to him and is free to
remarry, he must no longer be bound to her and
must be free to remarry too.
24Sound Doctrine
- Spouses are bound by the law of God.
- Rom. 72 the married woman is bound by the law
to her husband as long as he lives - 1 Cor. 739 A wife is bound by law as long as
her husband lives - Gods law looses ONLY the innocent spouse (Matt.
199 cf. Luke 1618).
25God Is Loving and Just!
- People argue that all other sins can be forgiven.
Why not divorce? - Is divorce the unpardonable sin?
- God is willing and eager, upon our repentance, to
forgive the sins of divorce and remarriage.
26Forgiveness Is NOT The Issue
- The real issue is
- CONSEQUENCES
- God has made a divorce law that has very serious
consequences.
27The Real Issue
- Can someone so sin, or be sinned against, that
the consequences of such a sin involves the
forfeiture of ones right to participate in a
future marriage relationship? - THE BIBLE SAYS YES.
- MAN WANTS TO SAY NO.
28Consequences Of Sin
- Do we have any indication elsewhere in Scripture
that people can so sin that they forfeit their
privilege to participate in a state, condition,
or relationship that they previously enjoyed
even though they may be forgiven? - YES, EXAMPLES IN ABUNDANCE.
29Forgiven, But Still Suffering Lasting Consequences
- Adam Eve expelled from Garden
- Moses couldnt enter promised land
- David son died, family against him
- Solomon division of the nation
- e.g., Criminal forgiven but in jail.
30Forgiven, But Still Suffering Lasting Consequences
- If biblical history teaches us anything, it
teaches that people cannot sin and then demand to
have things the way they were before. More often
than not, much suffering comes upon those who
violate Gods will, making it impossible for them
to enjoy past privileges though they can be
forgiven and have the hope of heaven.
31Consequences Of Sin
- Do we have any indication elsewhere in Scripture
that people can be so sinned against that their
privilege to participate in a state, condition,
or relationship that they previously enjoyed is
forfeited? - YES, EXAMPLES IN ABUNDANCE.
32Sinned Against With Lasting Consequences
- Joseph sold into slavery, imprisoned
- Esau cheated out of the Blessing
- Daniel, S, M, A righteous, but captive
- Foreign Wives divorced, children too
- e.g., M.A.D.D. child/ spouse still dead
33Divorce Has Serious Consequences
- Couples are commanded not to divorce. Should a
marriage break up unlawfully - both are to remain unmarried.
- Their divorce is contrary to Gods will, and
neither of the two is eligible to marry someone
else.
34Repentance Requires Ceasing the Sin of Adultery
- When one is in an unlawful marriage, adultery
MUST cease - Herod was married to Herodias, his brothers
wife, and must stop the adultery (Mark 616-18). - Corinthians who were adulterers must stop the
adultery (1 Cor. 69) - Jews who had married foreign women were required
to divorce (Ezra 103,11)
