Title: M2M Activities in ETSI
1M2M Activities in ETSI

3What is M2M?
- In the context of this presentation M2M is
considered to be Machine-to-Machine. - Also known as Man-to-Machine, Machine-to-Man,
Machine-to-Mobile and Mobile-to-Machine too
Many-to Mention - Machine-to-Machine involves communication without
(or only limited) human intervention. - The human is not the input, but only(optionally)
the output.
4Examples of M2M Applications (1 of 2)
Surveillance applications, alarms, object /
people tracking
Security Serenity
Fleet management, emission control, toll
payment, road safety related to activities in
TC ITS
Transportation
Related to e-Health, and also personal security
Heath care
Measurement, provisioning and billing of
utilitiessuch as oil, water, electricity, heat,
and others
Utilities
Production chain monitoring and automation

6Key Elements of M2M Architecture (1of 2)
- M2M Device
- A device that runs application(s) using M2M
capabilities and network domain functions. An M2M
Device is either connected straight to an Access
Network or interfaced to M2M Gateways via an M2M
Area Network. - M2M Area Network
- A M2M Area Network provides connectivity between
M2M Devices and M2M Gateways.Examples of M2M Area
Networks include Personal Area Network
technologies such as IEEE 802.15, SRD, UWB,
Zigbee, Bluetooth, etc or local networks such as
PLC, M-BUS, Wireless M-BUS. - M2M Gateways
- Equipments using M2M Capabilities to ensure M2M
Devices interworking and interconnection to the
Network and Application Domain. The M2M Gateway
may also run M2M applications.
7Key Elements of M2M Architecture (2of 2)
- M2M Core
- Composed of Core Networks and Service
Capabilities - Service Capabilities
- Provide functions that are shared by different
applications. Expose functionalities through a
set of open interfaces. Use Core Network
functionalities and simplify and optimize
applications development and deployment whilst
hiding network specificities to applications.
Examples include Data Storage and Aggregation,
Unicast and Multicast message delivery, etc. - M2M Applications (Server)
- Applications that run the service logic and use
Service Capabilities accessible via open
interfaces.

10M2M in ETSI
- ETSI TC M2M
- New ETSI Technical Committee focussed on M2M.
- Exists since only 7 months, but has already held
4 plenary meetings with 3 more planned this year. - Participants from Europe also USA, China, and
Korea.
11M2M in ETSI
- However TC M2M is also a group of very pleasant
humans, and not too many machines.
12M2M in ETSI
- ETSI TC M2M has the responsibility
- to collect and specify M2M requirements from
relevant stakeholders - to develop and maintain an end-to-end overall
high level architecture for M2M - to identify gaps where existing standards do not
fulfil the requirements and provide
specifications and standards to fill these gaps,
where existing standards bodies or groups are
unable to do so - to provide the ETSI main centre of expertise in
the area of M2M - to co-ordinate ETSIs M2M activity with that of
other standardization groups and fora.

15ETSI TC M2M, Future Challenges
- Meet the short deadlines for response to the EC
Mandate on Smart Metering in close cooperation
with the other ESOs (CEN and CENELEC). - Define content of M2M Release 1, and create the
workplan. - Identify all technologies to be included in the
M2M architecture and coordinate with the
responsible bodies. - Identify or specify open interfaces of the M2M
architecture. - Tackle such issues as
- Naming, Addressing and routing
- Service levels and QoS
- Security, authentification, data integrity,
privacy - Interconnect and interworking
- Testing and many more

21Conclusions
- M2M is here, and has massive potential for growth
- M2M first step to future Internet of things
- Standardization is essential for long term
development of the technology and for
interoperability of networks and services - Operators and vendors wish to standardize end to
end M2M, and see ETSI as a good place to do the
work - Come and join us
