  • Introduced a system of pass laws
  • Regulation of movement of blacks from the tribal
    regions to the areas occupied by whites and
    colored

Pass Laws
  • Restricted the movement of blacks
  • Prohibited their movement from one district to
    another without a signed pass
  • Blacks were not allowed onto streets after dark
    and they had to carry a pass at all times.

Apartheid Laws
  • The Population Registration Act (1950)
  • Required for all citizens to be registered as
    black, white or colored
  • Bantu Authorities Act (1951)
  • Created separate government structures for black
    people
  • The Reservation of Separate Amenities Act (1953)
  • Prohibited people of different races from using
    the same public amenities (drinking fountains,
    restrooms ect.)
  • The Extension of University Education Act (1959)
  • Created separate universities for Black, Colored
    and Indians

Apartheid Day to Day
  • Blacks were not allowed to buy hard liquor
  • Black rarely had plumbing or electricity
  • After1948 marriages between races were prohibited
  • Black were excluded from living or working in
    white areas
  • Black people were not allowed to employ whites
  • Transports and civil facilities were segregated
  • Non-whites were not allowed to run a businesses
    or professional practices

  • Most Publicized 1950s
  • 60,000 people were moved from Johannesburg to the
    new township of Soweto.
  • 3.5million people were forced to resettle during
    the 60s ,70s and early 80s
