Title: Pembrokeshire Local Action Network for Enterprise
1Pembrokeshire Local Action Network for Enterprise
Development
- Making a Positive Impact on the
- Local Economy
- a Professional Approach to Organising
- Festivals and Events
2Working With Communities
- Identify and assess local needs and opportunities
to improve their quality of life - Develop and implement social, cultural and
economic projects to address these needs and
opportunities
- Enhance the environment of the area, adopt
- good environmental practices, safeguard
- and interpret its rich heritage and wildlife.
3- Need identified for supporting community
Festivals and Events community action plans
- Transnational Fair held in September 2003
- PLANED Tourism Development Strategy -
- long-term sustainable approach to the
- development of the area its environment, its
economy, its heritage and its people.
4The Tourism Season in Pembrokeshire
- very seasonal traditional activities - rely on
reasonable weather - tourism trend - more weekend breaks out of season
- tourism research shows that the type of tourist
that we seek to attract to rural areas is someone
who enjoys exploring, not just the environment
and heritage of an area, but the nature and
culture of the local people
5Addressing this Challenge
- linking community interests and enthusiasm to
tourism development encouraging a more
professional approach - increasing the awareness of the tourism industry
of the opportunities - building on the wide range of local opportunities
from celebrating local heritage to local
community carnivals - helping local people to develop projects to
extend the tourist season by - identifying new opportunities developing skills
- improving the quality of the tourism destination
- adding depth to the tourism product
6The PLANED Innovative Approach is to
- Identify and assist the development of latent
economic activity
- Embed a culture of entrepreneurship in
communities and individuals as a core activity
- Ensure that all social, economic, cultural and
environmental activity is enhanced to provide
sustainable economic benefit.
7Bring together people with a wide range of skills
and knowledge to
- plan together
- work together
- celebrate together
8- Dates of events were not decided far enough in
advance to meet publication deadlines - Decisions on whether or not events would take
place were not being made until the last minute - Details of the content of events were not clear
- Details of local contacts were not always
available - There was no guarantee that an event which took
place one year would take place also in the next
year - The organisations of long standing events relied
on the efforts of fewer and fewer people
9Through its LEADER project Creating a Culture of
Entrepreneurship PLANED aims to encourage the
development of sustainable, well-organised
community events and festivals in Pembrokeshire
that will take place every year
10PLANEDs support can operate on number of levels
- Individual festivals and events in communities
that have not previously had events committees - Town / village festival and event groups planning
their first local programme of events - Area community-led festival and event groups
promoting festivals and events within that area
- Regional festival and event groups of communities
working together - Community-based festival and event groups from
several communities working together, linked by a
common theme

21There is always room for improvement
- More events spread throughout the year, but
particularly in April/May/June and
September/October - Better liaison and co-ordination to prevent
clashes of events - Closer networking between events of a similar
nature to exchange best practice, undertake joint
marketing etc. - Linking events and festivals more closely to
tourism offers and packages - Widespread promotion of the fun and experience of
festivals and events
