The demographic and social changes that
lengthened and reshaped our lives are responsible
for some of the major problems besetting family
life today.

Our lives have become not just longer but more
complicated. Stages of life that scarcely
existed a hundred years ago have become part of
the average persons experience
adolescence middle age empty nest retirement

Before mass longevity, the aged were not a huge
population. Mixed-up adolescents were rare
when adult work began in childhood and formal
education ended, in grade school. Identity was
not a problem when a persons place in society
was decided at birth.

Middle-aged people were not sandwiched between
the needs of their adolescent children and their
aging parents nor did they have to confront
the issue of what to do with the rest of their
lives.

• The emergence of old age as an expectable part of
  life is one of the essential ways we differ from
  our ancestors.

• Todays elders are among the first generations in
  which the mass of the population, not just the
  hardy few, survive long enough to experience
  the aging process.
