Adding Skin to a System of Bones
  • Load the bones file.
  • Create a box.
  • Put several slices through the box
  • Put a slice modifier on the box.
  • Go to Subobject mode.
  • Rotate the slice gizmos axis.
  • Move the slice gizmo the the slice location.
  • Click right on the box and select Collapse
    Stack.

Editing Mesh Vertices
  • Select the box.
  • Go into Subobject mode.
  • Press the vertex select button.
  • Select and move vertices.

  • Select the box.

Mirroring
  • Select the box.
  • Use the Mirror menu item under Tools on the
    top level Max menu.
  • Choose Instance to make the mirror image change
    with future changes to the original.
  • Set the offset to move the mirror image into the
    right position.

Unioning
  • Select the box.
  • Select Compounds and Boolean Compound Object
    on the Tab Panel.
  • Press Pick Operand B on the Command Panel.
  • Press the Union and Move buttons.
  • Click right on the unioned object and select
    Convert to Editable Mesh.

Smoothing the Mesh
  • Select the box.
  • Put a MeshSmooth modifier on the box.
  • Select NURMS smoothing.
  • Set the number of iterations to two or three.

You should use the skin modifier to attach the
bones to the skin before applying the smoothing
modifier. This way, the bones will move the mesh
cage, not the smoothed surface.
