- Son of Athenian King, Aegeus
- Spent childhood in his mothers home, a city in
Southern Greece. - Aegeus went back to Athens before his son was
born and left a sword and a pair of shoes covered
with a stone. - He told his wife that when the boy was strong
enough to roll away the stone and retrieve the
things beneath it should could send him to Greece
to meet him.
3Theseus Great Athenian Hero
- The boy strong beyond others, lifted the stone
and was on his way to Athens. - He refused to go by water and instead went to
Athens by land killing all the dangerous bandits
in his path. - When Theseus reached Athens he was a hero
acknowledged by everyone.

- Theseus was invited to a banquet by the king,
whom was unaware that Theseus was his son. - Afraid of his sons popularity he invited him
with the idea of poisoning Theseus. - The idea was Medeas, the heroine of the Quest of
the Golden Fleece, and she knew who Theseus was. - As she handed the cup to Theseus he pulled out
his sword wishing to make himself known to his
father. - Aegeus noticed it and dashed the cup to the
ground and Madea escaped to Asia. - Aegeus proclaimed to Greece that Theseus was his
son.

- Years before Theseus arrival Minos, the ruler of
Crete, had lost his son Androgeus. - Aegeus sent Androgeus to kill a bull and instead
the bull killed him. - Minos captured Athens and said that he would raze
it to the ground unless they sent him 7 maidens
and 7 youths. - When they reached Crete they were given to the
minotaur, half bull, half human.

- Minos arranged a place of confinement, the
labyrinth, a maze, in which escape was
impossible. - Theseus urged to be one of the victims.
- He told his dad that he would fly a white sail
instead of a black coming home if he succeeded.

- When Theseus arrived in Crete, Ariadne, Minoss
daughter fell in love with him. - She gave him a hint to get to the Minotaur and
kill him and in return he had to take her back to
Athens to marry her. - He was to take a ball of thread and fasten it to
the inside of each door and unwind as he went on. - He came upon the Minotaur sleeping, and beat it
to death with his fist.

- On the way to Athens the stopped at the island,
Naxos. - Theseus left without Ariadne.
- As he reached Athens he forgot to hoist his white
sail. - When his father saw the black one, he thought
Theseus to be dead and threw himself down from a
rocky height, into the sea, and was killed.

- Theseus became king and established a government
in which the people ruled themselves. - Thus, Athens became the happiest and most
prosperous city in the world. - Many times Theseus proved to be a great leader.
- He showed great dignity when he had the lost
lives of the Great war of the Seven against
Thebes. - In another story, Theseus gives his hand to
Hercules (his cousin) and prevents him from
killing himself in his madness.

- Theseus went to the country of the amazons and
brought back a woman, Hippolyta. - Their son was named, Hippolytus.
- Theseus went to Calydon, killed a raging boar,
and saved his friend Pirithous. - One day in attempt to test Theseus if he was
quite the hero everyone said he was by stealing
his cattle. - He met Theseus and forgot everything and pleaded
to Theseus. - All Theseus asked for was his friendship.

- Theseus was going to attempt to steal Helen of
Troy. - He succeeded but her brother captured her back.
- They didnt find him, for he was on his way the
underworld with Pirithous. - Hades seated them in a chair in which they forgot
everything. - Hercules came to rescue Theseus but couldnt
rescue Pirithous, as he sat there forever.

- In later years, Theseus married Ariadnes sister
Phaedra. - They raised Hippolytus and Phaedra fell in love
with him. - He showed no affection towards her and she killed
herself anguish. - She left behind a note that revealed Hippolytus
had killed her, which he hadnt. - When Theseus arrived, he read the note and
banished from the land.

- As Hippolytus was leaving, Artemis came up from
the water and spoke to Theseus. - Artemis told him that his son had not killed his
wife the died fighting her love for Hippuolytus. - Hippolytus was killed, and Theseus was on his
road to death.

- Theseus was at the court of King Lycomedes. Some
say he was banished by the Athenians. - He was killed by the king, his friend, and his
host. - Soon after Theseuss death the Athenians had
built a great tomb for him in honor for Thebes,
the protector of the defenseless.
