Actions by littoral states
  • As international concern mounted over pirates
    attacks in and around the Malacca Straits,
    amongst the littoral states took following
    actions to reduce piracy and safeguard shipping
    transit
  • Trilateral Coordinated Patrol among Indonesia,
    Malaysia and Singapore was launched on 19 July
    2004.
  • Mainly intended to protect the intern of the
    countries that use Malacca and Singapore Strait
    for their transportation.

Monitoring Progress
  • MISC Emergency Respond Centre (ERC)
  • - Activated and manned since the
    start of the incident on a 24 hour / 7 day
    basis.
  • MISC ERC Team
  • Monitored the position of all other MISC vessels
    transiting the Gulf of Aden via online
    satellite-based tracking system.
  • Monitored the position of both MTD and MT5 via
    SSAS Alerts received from the vessels, satellite
    based tracking system and also via telephone
    contacts with the vessels on a regular basis.

Co-operation with Government Agencies
  • The incident was immediately reported to
    Malaysian Governments relevant authorities,
    among these were
  • Majlis Keselamatan Negara (MKN).
  • Wisma Putra ( Communication with Philippine
    Government )
  • Pusat Komunikasi Marin Malaysia
  • Scheduled meetings were held in Putrajaya headed
    by MKN together with various Government Agencies
    to coordinate the information sharing and action
    plans.
  • The Malaysian Governments relevant
    representatives were present whenever
    communications were established with the vessels.
  • The Government kept a close watch over the
    negotiations and made the necessary preparations
    after discussion with MISC.
  • MISC led the negotiations, with the support,
    advise and agreement of all concerned parties.
  • The RMN was kept updated and ready at short
    notice to assist if there were any emergencies.
