9VISION - THE CONTEXT
- The 1980s marked a watershed in the history of
Barnsley
- closure of the coalfields had major effects on
the economic and social life of the borough - massive issues in respect of poverty, ill-health
and deprivation.
10DEPRIVATION
- Barnsley was a town with high levels of
- deprivation
- workless adults
- adults claiming incapacity benefit
- low wage households
- underachievement at each learning stage
It was also a town with a history of low
investment in learning
11A RADICAL SHIFT TO GIVE BARNSLEY LEARNERS MORE
OPPORTUNITIES
What we are setting out to do in Barnsley is very
different. Remaking Barnsley is about
transforming the town centre. Remaking Learning
is about transforming people. A new vision for
education, new ideas, the new Advanced Learning
Centres, are about transforming the lives of our
young people. With massive investment, a change
in the way we learn we think we can transform
our young peoples lives and put them up there
with the best that the country can offer.
Councillor Steve Houghton Leader of the
Council Barnsley MBC
