Title: Irony
1Irony
- Irony is a form of expression in which an
implicit (or real) meaning is concealed or
contradicted by the explicit (or apparent)
meaning of the expression. Irony involves the
perception that things are not what they are said
to be or what they seem.
2Irony and Sarcasm
- Sarcasm and Irony I mean to be mocking, and I
also intend to impart a meaning that is in strong
contrast to what the literal meaning of what I am
saying. - Sarcasm without Irony I mean to be jeering and
nasty, but there is no difference between what I
say and what I mean. - Irony without Sarcasm There is a large
understatement in what I say and what I mean, but
my intent is to complement, not to deride. - Neither sarcasm nor irony There is neither
malice in my intent nor any difference between
what I say and what I mean.
3Irony and Incongruity
- Higher Order Thinking Alert Alert Alert
- Incongruity something out of place something
that does not seem to fit in with or be
appropriate to its context - Irony a form of expression in which an implicit
(or real) meaning is concealed or contradicted by
the explicit (or apparent) meaning of the
expression
4Well Alanis, no, actually
- An old man turned ninety-eight
- He won the lottery and died the next day
- It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
- It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
- And isn't it ironic...dontcha think
-
- It's like rain on your wedding day
- It's a free ride when you've already paid
- It's the good advice that you just didn't take
- Who would've thought...it figures
-
- Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
- He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids
goodbye - He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
- And as the plane crashed down he thought
- "Well isn't this nice..."
- And isn't it ironic...dontcha think
-
Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on
you When you think everything's okay and
everything's going right And life has a funny
way of helping you out when You think
everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face A traffic jam when you're already
late A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on
you When you think everything's okay and
everything's going right And life has a funny
way of helping you out when You think
everything's gone wrong and everything blows
up In your face A traffic jam when you're
already late A no-smoking sign on your cigarette

5Verbal Irony
Most basic form of irony. It is simply saying
something and meaning something entirely
different, even the opposite.
6Socratic Irony
- Pretending ignorance, or an acceptance of an idea
that one doesnt really share. Socrates would do
this with his students, seeming to accept their
point of view only to expose their flaws.
7Dramatic, or Tragic Irony
- In performances and fiction, "tragic irony"
becomes a device for heightening the intensity of
a dramatic situation. It may take several forms - the person speaking may realize the irony of his
words while those s/he is speaking to does not - or he or she may be unconscious while the other
listeners share the knowledge with the
spectators - or the spectators may alone realize the irony.
8Romantic Irony and Metafiction
- when a writer/director/speaker, etc. builds up a
serious tone and then breaks it intentionally to
make fun of the seriousness of it. Metafiction,
an example of romantic irony, is a kind of
fiction which self-consciously addresses the
devices of fiction, and usually interrupts to
remind the audience or reader that it is really
only a story.
