16- MBI Incubator at Gateway Park
- The MBI Incubator at Gateway Park is a
- joint partnership between MBI and WPI.
- The incubator, located on the ground floor of the
newly constructed WPI Life Science's building
houses laboratories, shared equipment and offices
for up to six start-up biomedical companies. This
collaboration will specifically identify and
capture academic and science related research and
transfer these discoveries into commercial based
company formations and jobs. - MBI has built out and operates the facility.
- Further technology growth is also envisioned
within the Park as MBI "graduate" incubator
companies grow into larger space requirements
thus providing further employment opportunities
within our burgeoning Central Mass regional
biomedical industry. - Current MBI Tenant Companies at MBIs Gateway
Park Facility - Biocytogen gt VivoPath
- BioTechnic Products gt Targeted Cell
Therapies - CellMosaic

20Central Massachusetts - tremendous opportunities
- Central Massachusetts was identified as one of
the few areas in the US with the resources to
emerge as bio/life sciences industry leader. (4)
One of the main reasons Bristol-Myers Squibb
chose to locate its new 1B bio-processing
facility in Central Massachusetts (Devens) was
because they wanted to be near Worcester. Let me
repeat that Ranch Kimball, Chairman of
the Board, Mass Development When asked if he was
going to stay in Worcester, Dr. Craig Mello
replied Absolutely, I think the cost of doing
research here is so much lower than in the Boston
area. I'm not sure what it works out to per
square foot, but it's quite significant -- the
cost of space is lower, the cost of living for
employees. . . ." Worcester based Nobel
Laureate and Professor of Molecular Medicine, Dr.
Craig Mello (5) It is wonderful to see this
section of Worcester come alive. The combination
of life science companies, large and small, and
affordable housing is a winner. Daniel
OConnell, Former Secretary, Commonwealth of
Massachusetts Executive Office of Economic
Development.
21Central Massachusetts - tremendous opportunities
- The Eds and Meds
- 13 colleges/Worcester area enrollment gt 30,000
students - UMass Medical
- Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health
Sciences - Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary
Medicine - UMass Memorial Hospital
- St. Vincent Hospital at the Worcester Medical
Center - The Commonwealth of Massachusetts continues to
make major investments in Central Massachusetts
as a life sciences, bioengineering center. - UMass Medical School - 1980

22The Trend Westward
- Developing companies and their CEOs are moving
westwardbetween Routes 128 and 495 and along the
Route 495 corridor - In the past five years 20 biotech companies
including 14 from Cambridge have moved into
space along Rt. 128 (6) - Genzyme headquarters is in Cambridge, but their
largest research facility in the world is in
Framingham. Also in Southborough, and Westboro -
theyre moving westward! - Genzyme regularly evaluates locations
where we might expand our research or
manufacturing presence to help sustain our
growth. We were greatly impressed by Gateway Park
and consider it to be an attractive spot for any
biotechnology company looking to grow in
Massachusetts. - - Henry
Fitzgerald, Vice President of Facility
Operations, Genzyme Corporation - WPI sponsored the second annual Biotechnology
Bioengineering Corporate Forum on March 22, 2007
with over 225 life sciences professionals in
attendance. Keynote speaker 2006 Jim McGovern
2007 Tim Murray
23The Trend Westward
- 49 of the 100 largest Biotech firms in
Massachusetts are located
between 128 and Worcester (7) - Only ONE of the top 25 medical device firms is in
Boston (8) - Following companies are now in Central
Massachusetts - Abbott Labs (Worcester) Cogmedix (Worcester)
Charles River Labs (Shrewsbury) Bristol-Myers
Squibb (Devens) Thermo Fisher Scientific
Athena Diagnostics (Worcester) Pall Corporation
(Northborough) Waters Corporation (Milford)
Sepracor (Marlborough) Boston Scientific

25The Massachusetts Life Sciences Super Cluster
Comprised of universities, teaching hospitals,
research institutions, as well as biotechnology,
medical device, pharmaceutical, diagnostic, and
instrumentation companies in addition to the many
other support services companies that contribute
to the growth of life sciences in the state. The
historical core is in Boston-Cambridge, but
because of the vitality of the industry in
Worcester, the city is being recognized as an
additional anchor.
