Who will rule China when Mao died in 1976 ?

• On the strict communist wing
• The Gang of Four Four politicians, including
  Maos wife, wanted to keep China strictly
  communist and under strict control of the Party,
  with no change, and poor Human Rights.
• Hua Guofeng who wanted to run China like
  Communist Russia.

• Reformers on the moderate wing
• The Prime Minister Zhou Enlai, encouraged
  peaceful contact with the West, development in
  Industry and Agriculture. He got the disgraced
  Deng Xiaoping back into power in 1973.
• Deng Xiaoping who wanted to reform the economy,
  and use practical people to make improvements,
  even if they were not strict communists.

What actually happened ? Zhou died a few months
before Mao, and Mao chose Hua Guofeng to take
over after him. Hua had the Gang of Four arrested
as being too extreme, but was in his turn eased
out by Deng Xiaoping, who took over in 1980.
