2
What is the Register of Underground Cable Owners?
  • The register is an internet based register of
Denmarks approx. 4,500 cable owners (water
works, municipalities, phone companies etc.), who
own underground utility cables, pipes etc.
  • All contractors must enquire in the register
before they carry out work in streets and roads.
  • The enquiry gives access to the addreses of all
cable owners, who own cables in the work area of
    the contractor.
  • Afterwards the contractor must contact the cable
owner for precise information on the location of
    the cables.
  • The register thus works like a phone book! It
contains cable owners and not cables.
  • All contractors must pay a small fee when
enquiring. In turn they save expenses on cable
    damages.
  • The register is abbreviated LER.
  • You will find the register on-line at www.ler.dk.

3
Why have a Register of Underground Cable Owners?
  • Every year underground cables and pipes are
damaged more than 50,000 times in Denmark.
  • Often this lead to disruptions of electricity,
    phone signals and water supply.
  • The damages costs Danish society approx. 210 mio.
DKR ( 28.2 mio.) per year!
  • Approx. 50 of the damages are due to lack of
knowledge of the position of the cables.
  • On this basis contractors, cable owners and the
Danish Parliament agreed to establish LER in 2005.

    digging.

6
How does a contractor use LER? (3)
  • The result is an overview of the cable owners in
    your work area.
  • You can automatically send e-mails to the owners,
where you ask them to send the exact location of
their cables in your working area.
  • Or you can phone or call the cable owners.

7
It is stupid not to use LER!
  • If you enquire in LER before carrying out work,
your position is strong if cable owners seek
compensation for damages on their cables.
  • If you have not enquired in LER, you run the risk
of paying a very expensive compensation.
  • According to the Danish law on cable owners you
can be fined if you do not enquire in LER before
    carrying out work.
  • You can read more on LER (in Danish) on
    www.ler.dk.
  • You can also call or e-mail the LER-helpdesk (45
    70 33 30 03 og ler_at_ler.dk) for further help and
    information.
