Grain Pattern
  • Can often influence the strength of the wood, and
can determine the age of the wood. When the grain
is close together, the stronger it is.
  • For example, pine has very close grain in
comparison to mahogany, which might also make it
    stronger.
  • PINE MAHOGANY

4
Properties of Wood
5
Colour
  • Different tree species vary greatly in colour,
and can effect which material is must use for
    you.
  • For example, Pine is very light coloured compared
to teak which is very dark.
  • PINE MAHOGANY
  • OAK TEEK

6
Texture
  • sometimes the grain of the wood can add texture
    to material.

7
Workability
  • some materials are easier work and remove than
others. Pine and MDF will sand very easily, where
as Mahogany is very difficult to work. However,
this means that it is also more resistant to
    wear.
  • PINE MDF

8
Structural Strength
  • vary greatly from weak to strong. Eg. oak is very
strong as it has a close grain structure, but
very heavy. Balsa for example has a strong weight
    to strength ratio.
  • OAK

9
Sizes / Shapes of Materials
  • Wood can come in a range of different sizes
depending upon their desired use. They include-

Wood can be bought in square section and often
used for table legs for example.
Dowel Rods can be bought in various diameters and
can be used for various uses such as pegs.
Boards or moulds can be bought in various sizes
and thicknesses, but are often very expensive as
there is a lot of waste involved in the
manufacture.
10
Man Made
Some MAN MADE WOODS include MDF Plywood
Hardboard Chipboard
11
Man Made Woods
  • Man made woods are commonly used in industrial
manufacture as they are available in large
    sheets.
  • Often cheaper than natural materials.
  • They have a uniform strength throughout the
    material.
  • 2 types include-
  • MDF PLYWOOD
  • Lots of fibres of wood glued together
    Layers of wood, glued together
  • to produce a large sheet of material.
At 90 degree angles to produce a
  • MDF is a good material for spraying the
    strongest material possible.
  • as there is no grain. It has an ugly end
    grain.

Materials 1 Task 1
  • Which materials is most environmentally friendly?
    Hardwood or Softwood? Explain why.
  • Why are manufactured boards used in commercial
    manufacturing?
  • What does MDF stand for?
  • What materials would be most suitable for Can be
    hardwoods, softwoods or man made.
  • Refitting school laboratory?
  • Doors and fittings for a new house?
  • Manufacturing toy wooden trains?
  • Wooden skateboard?
  • Shelving Units?
  • A traditional cottage being renovated and new
    beams are required?
  • Outdoor furniture?
  • A cheap dining room table top?
  • IKEA things?

Materials 1 Task 2
  • You are to split into teams of 6.
  • The task will involve you to organise yourself
using the process of batch production.
  • The aim of the task is to increase you ability in
working with wood, and your knowledge of it as a
    material.

  • Specific Materials-
  • Wood is not a specific material.
  • Wood-
  • Oak High structural strength, difficult to work,
    dark colour, close grain pattern,
  • Pine Cheap Furniture, fast growing, easy to use,
pale colour, structurally weak, easily degrades,
    cheap
  • MDF Man Made, uniform strength, fibres of wood,
no grain pattern, easy to manipulate
  • Mahogany hard to use, very dark colour, strong
    grain and strength, expensive
  • Balsa very soft and easy to manipulate,
    hardwood, light colour
  • Terminology
  • Hardwoods (Slow growing) and Softwoods (fast
    growing)
  • Man Made Woods
  • Veneer
