Sampling Definitions

• Population
• All possible cases. The whole or totality with
  which the research is concerned.
• Sample
• One or more elements selected from a population
  for the purpose of study.
• Sampling
• The process of selecting participants. Sampling
  occurs when one takes/draws a portion of a
  population because of reality constraints.

• Probability Sampling
• Also known as random sampling
• Highly precise, scientific technique
• Able to calculate sampling error
• Chance dictates selection
• Speaks directly to the issue of external validity
• Must have a sampling frame

• Also known as non-random sampling
• Much less scientific and precise
• Self-selection or selection by researcher
• Serious problems with external validity
• Cannot calculate sampling error
• No sampling frame
