Introduction
  • Delivering the agenda of Valuing People to
    promote social inclusion requires partnership
    working . This session aims to show the links
    from national policy to local practice for
    learners, unpaid carers, the health and social
    care workforce, employers, and those involved in
    the development and delivery of training
    programmes.
  • A particular focus is to provide information on
    the range of programmes offered by City and
    Guilds towards promoting social inclusion. Also
    for participants to network and share ideas and
    experiences for working in partnership.

Valuing People a new strategy for learning
disability for the 21st century, 2001 DOH
  • Provides a clear vision for listening to and
    supporting people with learning difficulties and
    disabilities.
  • Says that people with learning disabilities
    should have the same opportunities for post-16
    education and lifelong learning as everyone else
  • Objective 7

    lead full and purposeful lives with their
    community and to develop a range of friendships,
    activities and relationships

  • Valuing the health and social care workforce,
    including unpaid carers, through effective

    national and local objectives and national
    minimum standards

Learning and Skills Act 2000
  • Established the Learning and Skills Council,
    with a duty to
  • have regard to the needs of people with
    learning difficulties (Section 13)
  • and a duty to
  • have due regard to promote equality of
    opportunity between disabled and non disabled
    people (Section 14)
  • The Act also established the Connexions as an
    advice and guidance service for young people.
