End of Slavery
  • Arguments over slavery
  • Necessary evil Southern agriculture needs
    cheap labor
  • Provides food, shelter, clothing for slaves
  • - Inhuman way to treat people
  • - our country is based on freedom and equality

  • Tension between North and South
  • Argue over the issue
  • Balance of power in Congress was key
  • As new States join should they have slaves? North
    say no, South say yes.
  • New States would upset the vote balance in
    Congress
  • Missouri Compromise was passed, drew a line
    across the country. Above the line no slaves,
    below could have slaves.

Dred Scott Case 1857
  • A slave who was taken by has owner to a non-slave
    State (Illinois)
  • When the owner moved back to Missouri Dred argued
    that he should be free as he was living in a free
    state.
  • The case went to court and they ruled that he was
    property, as property he had no rights to take a
    case to court.
  • Also ruled that owners can take property where
    ever they want without penalty.

Segregation and equality
  • Segregation- the separation of people by race.
  • Plessy vs. Ferguson
  • 1896
  • Issue of railcar passengers being separate, did
    it violate equal protection laws?
  • Court said it was okay so long as facilities were
    equal. Seperate but Equal is okay.

New ruling 1954
  • Brown vs. Board of Education Topeka. KS.
  • Black girl had to got to school 21 blocks away,
    not to the school 1 block away because that was
    for white kids.
  • Family argued that it was unequal
  • Court agreed and Segregation became illegal
  • New era of integration- getting blacks and
    whites mixing up again.

Affirmative action
  • A government policy to end years of racial and
    sex discrimination.
  • Companies and other organizations have to hire
    minorities and fill ratios.
  • Some argue this gets minorities jobs they dont
    deserve. Bad for them and companies
  • Some argue it discriminates against white males.
