---For Gatsbys Funeral
  • The books final chapter begins with the police
    and the photographers and newspaper men storming
    Gatsbys house.
  • Nick becomes worried that he is handling Gatsbys
    burial arrangements, believing there must be
    someone closer to Gatsby who should be conducting
    the business at hand.
  • So Nick makes arrangements for his burial and try
    to get his so called friends come to his funeral.

  • Results all the people who so eagerly attended
    his parties, drinking his liquor and eating his
    food, refuse to become involved.
  • Daisy and Tom are mysteriously leaving on a trip.
  • Meyer Wolfshiem, Gatsbys business partner,
    refuses twice to publicly mourn his friends
    death, claiming I cant get mixed up in it.

    Young Parke is in trouble and asking Gatsby for
    dropping bond business.
  • Klipspringer called up to inquire about a pair of
    his tennis shoes, saying he would rather stay

    funeral.

  • Henry C. Gatz, Gatsbys father, indicates he will
    be coming from Minnesota to bury his son, and
    indeed came a few days later.
  • Henry Gatz is proud of his son and saves a
    picture of his house. He also fills Nick in on
    Gatsbys early life, showing him a book in which
    a young Gatsby had written a schedule for
    self-improvement.

  • On Gatsbys funeral only Nick, Henry Gatz, a few
    servants, the postman, and the minister at the
    graveside.
  • Then, a man with owl-eyes appeared at the
    cemetery, saying Gatsby the poor son-of-a-birch.

  • Nick, completely disillusioned with what he has
    experienced in the East, prepares to head back to
    the Midwest.
  • Before leaving, Nick interacts with two people
    from his past.
  • First, he speaks with Jordan and, although he
    still feels fondly toward her, he once again
    coolly leaves her.

  • Finally, one autumn day, Nick meets Tom along
    Fifth Avenue. Tom, seeing Nick, makes the first
    move to speak. Initially Nick refuses to shake
    Toms hand, upset with what Tom has come to
    represent. In the course of their short
    discussion, Nick learns Tom had a role in
    Gatsbys deathGeorge Wilson worked his way to
    the Buchannan house in East Egg and Tom told him
    who owned the car that struck Myrtle. When Nick
    leaves, he shakes Toms hand because he felt
    suddenly as though he were talking to a child.

---Nicks last visit
  • On the last night before leaving, Nick goes to
    Gatsbys mansion, then to the shore where Gatsby
    once stood, arms outstretched toward the green
    light.
  • Strolling down to the water he is called to
    remember the way Gatsbys house used to be,
    filled with people and lavish parties. He
    considers Gatsbys wonder at picking out Daisys
    dock in the darkness, how far Gatsby had traveled
    in his life, and how he always had hope in the
    future. In his final thought, Nick links society
    to the boats eternally moving against the current
    on the Sound.
