1
A Study of the Book of ActsChapters 1 -
12Lesson 2
  • Annandale church of Christ
  • Spring 2009

2
Lesson 2
  • Apostles gathered on Pentecost
  • The Holy Spirit comes
  • Peter addresses the people
  • Calls on Joel
  • Accuses the people
  • Appeals to Psalms of David
  • Reaction of the people
  • Peters answer
  • Response of the people
  • The church is established

3
Resurrection to Pentecost
  • Jesus rose from the dead after his crucifixion
  • Spent forty days with his disciples
  • Gave many infallible proofs he was alive
  • Met with the apostles and gave them instructions
    to wait in Jerusalem
  • Ascended into heaven
  • The apostles returned to Jerusalem as instructed

4
Pentecost
  • 50th part of a thing
  • Feast day 50 days after Passover
  • One of three annual Jewish feasts Passover,
    Pentecost, Feast of Tabernacles
  • Also called Feast of harvest, Feast of the
    First-Fruits, Feast of Weeks
  • Considered by many the greatest of the feasts
    most well attended
  • Many who came to Passover stayed for Pentecost

5
Apostles on Pentecost
  • All together in one place
  • Probably in a room of the temple
  • Waiting for the promise of the Father
  • Christ had told them they would receive power
when the Holy Spirit came upon them
  • They would be witnesses to Him in Jerusalem,
Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth
  • They would preach repentance and remission of sins

6
Holy Spirit Comes
  • Sound like a mighty wind filled the house
  • What seemed like cloven tongues of fire sat on
    the apostles
  • Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit
  • Began to speak with other tongues
  • People were bewildered
  • Everyone heard then in their own language
  • People from fifteen countries there

7
Speaking in Tongues
  • Apostles spoke in languages the people understood
  • No interpreter was needed
  • Today some religious groups who claim to speak in
tongues speak gibberish that no one understands
  • Paul said (1 Cor. 1427-28) If anyone speaks in
a tongue, let it be two or at most three, each in
turn and let one interpret. But if there is no
    interpreter, let him keep silent
  • (1 Cor. 1422) Therefore tongues are for a
sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers

8
Reaction of the People
  • Confused because they heard in their own language
  • Amazed and marveled because the apostles were
    Galileans
  • Heard them speaking the wonderful works of God
  • Wondered what these things meant
  • Some thought the apostles were drunk

9
Peter Addresses the People
  • These men are not drunk
  • This is what was spoken of by the prophet Joel
  • God would pour out His Spirit on all people
  • They would see visions and prophecy
  • God would show wonders
  • Whoever calls on the Lord will be saved

10
Joel 228-32
  • In the last days, God says I will pour out my
spirit on all people.Your sons and daughters
will prophecy, your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.Even on my
servants, both men and women, I will pour out my
Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.I
will show wonders in the heaven above and signs
on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of
smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the
moon to blood before the coming of the great and
glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.

11
Jesus Crucified
  • Jesus was attested by God to them by miracles,
signs and wonders he performed in their midst
  • You took him by lawless hands and crucified him
  • God raised him from the dead as David prophesied

12
Davids Prophecy
  • I foresaw the Lord always before my face. For He
is at my right hand. Therefore my heart rejoiced,
and my tongue was gladMoreover my flesh also
will rest in hope. For you will not leave my soul
in Hades,Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see
corruption. You have made known to me the ways of
lifeYou will make me full of joy in Your
    presence.
  • (Psalm 168-11)

13
Peters Interpretation
  • David died and was buried in Jerusalem
  • His tomb was with them at that time
  • Therefore David did not speak of himself
  • He prophesied about the Christ whom God would
    raise up
  • God had raised up Jesus whom they crucified
  • The apostles were witnesses to this
  • Being at the right hand of God Jesus through the
Holy Spirit had poured out what they saw and
    heard
  • David said The Lord said to my Lord, sit at My
right hand till I make Your enemies Your
    footstool. (Ps 1101)
  • God made this Jesus whom you crucified both Lord
    and Christ

14
What Should They do?
  • The people were cut to the heart
  • They asked Peter and the apostles what should
    they do
  • Peter repliedRepent, and let every one of you
be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the
remission of sins and you shall receive the gift
of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and
to your children, and to all who are afar off, as
many as the Lord our God will call.

15
Is Baptism Essential?
  • Acts 241 And they who gladly received his word
were baptized and about 3,000 were added to
    them.
  • Acts 812 they were baptized both men and
    women.
  • Acts 838 And both Philip and the Eunuch went
down into the water and he baptized him.
  • Acts 918 and he received his sight at once and
    arose and was baptized.
  • Acts 1043 And he commanded them to be baptized
in the name of he Lord.
  • Acts 1615 And when she was baptized with her
    household
  • Acts 1633 And immediately he and all his family
    were baptized.
  • Acts 188 And many of the Corinthians, hearing,
    believed and were baptized.

16
Effect of Baptism
  • Rom 63 Or do you not know that as many of us as
were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized
    into his death?
  • 1Co 1213 For by one Spirit are we all baptized
into one body and have been made to drink into
    one Spirit.
  • Gal 327 For as many of you as were baptized
into Christ have put on Christ.
  • Col. 212 buried with him in baptism, in which
you also were raised with him through faith in
the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
  • 1 Pet. 321 There is also an antitype which now
saves us baptism (not the removal of filth of
the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience),
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

17
Holy Spirit Gift or Giver?
  • (Acts 238) Repent, and let every one of you be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the
remission of sins and you shall receive the gift
    of the Holy Spirit
  • (Acts 532) And we are witnesses to these
things, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has
given to those who obey Him.
  • (1 Cor. 619) Or do you not know that your body
is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you,
whom you have from God, and you are not your
    own?
  • (John 738-39) He who believes in Me, as the
scripture has said, out of his heart will flow
rivers of living water. But this He spoke
concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in
Him would receive for the Holy Spirit was not
yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

18
Alternate Views
  • Context must determine which is meant by the
grammatical construction (the Greek is the
possessive genitive case). It is the same
construction as found in John 410 and Eph. 47
where one understands that a gift is given by God
    or Christ.
  • (John 410) Jesus answered and said to her, If
you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says
to you, Give me drink, you would have asked
Him, and He would have given you living
water.(Eph. 47) But to each one of us grace was
given according to the measure of Christs gift.

19
Alternate Views (Contd)
  • 2. If you will compare the above verses (Acts
238-39) you will see that Peter has picked up
the last part of Joel 232 here at the end of his
speech. So Joels prophecy was still in his mind.
But consider In Joel the promise made to those
whom Jehovah calls is they shall be delivered
or saved. But in Acts 238-39 the promise made to
as many as the Lord our God shall call unto him
is the gift of the Holy Spirit. So the two
promises would seem to be the same and the gift
of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 is the salvation
    promised in Joel.

20
Alternate Views (Contd)
  • 3. Those who obeyed these conditions for the
remission of sins would receive the gift of the
Holy Spirit. Some believe this to be the gift
promised by the Holy Spirit that is, salvation.
Others believe that the Holy Spirit is the gift.
According to the grammar, either of these views
    could be correct.

21
The Promise is to
  • You
  • Your children
  • All who are afar off
  • As many as the Lord our God will call

22
Results
  • Those who received the word were baptized
  • Three thousand were added to them
  • Continued in the apostles doctrine and breaking
    of bread and prayers
  • Believers had all in common
  • Sold possessions and divided among all
  • Continued with one accord in the temple
  • Breaking of bread from house to house
  • Praising God having favor with the people
  • The Lord added to the church daily those who were
    being saved
