Compost, Water, Toilets, and Agriculture
2
  • Water has been dubbed the oil of the 21st
    Century.
  • Flush toilets use approximately 40 of water
    piped into the home.
  • Many pharmaceutical drugs can be excreted down
the toilet in their biologically active forms.
  • Nationally, illnesses related to polluted water
    afflict thousands each year.

3
  • Composting toilets save water and complete
    the nutrient cycle.
  • They limit chemicals, such as nitrates and
chlorine from entering our water supply.
  • The composting process can degrade toxic
    chemicals.

4
  • In Nova Scotia, no organic materials are allowed
into landfills. Everything is composted, reducing
the mass of trash by 50.
  • This also renders the trash biologically stable
and not likely to undergo chemical changes which
could pollute the area where its stored.

5
Capturing the nutrients from human waste for
use in agriculture further integrates us into
the eco-system while at the same time reducing
our ecological footprint from our use of
chemical fertilizers, fossil fuels, and more.

in Maryland, and a city in Southern China all

  • Concentrating on domestic water use will not make
the biggest impact, but rather should be a
    component of a larger strategy.
  • Composting does require participation by
    everyone involved on daily basis.
  • High participation in household composting could
create the grassroots base for industry change.
