Where is El Alamein?
El Alamein is located in north Egypt next to
Alexandria. It is located in the southeastern
shore of the Mediterranean sea.

Allied Situation - 1942
  • Churchill pressed in N. Atlantic.
  • Previous battle of Gazala allies pushed back
  • El Alamein last allied stand.
  • Suez canal at stake very important for
    shipments.

Nazi commander Erwin Rommel
  • Nicknamed the Desert Fox
  • Distinguished Nazi general.
  • Had a full knowledge of military
    techniques/tactics.
  • Nazi commander at Normandy.

British Commander Bernard Montgomery 1887-1976
  • Replaced general Auchinleck after El Alamein 1.
  • Two main goals- organisation and morale.
  • Involved in Normandy campaign recommended for
    Supreme general.

  • El Alamein 1- 1-27 July 1942
  • Rommel attacked first
  • To no avail
  • Allies counterattack to relieve their flank
  • But they as well had no success.
  • Results Tactical draw, allies stop Nazi advance.

  • El Alamein 2- Oct. 23-Nov. 5 1942
  • Allies advanced
  • Fell victim to depth ingenuity of Nazi mines.
  • Rommel returned to battle (he had been in Germany
    the last few days)
  • Finding his army in dire need of fuel and food.
  • Nazi supply ship sunk by torpedo bombers
    Rommels last hope gone.
  • Rommel redeploys his north smashed at the
    mini-battle of Tel al aqqaqir.
  • Rommel withdraws against Hitlers orders with the
    quote If we stay here, my men wont last three
    days If I do obey the Fuhrers orders, theres a
    chance my men wont believe me my men come
    first!

After El Alamein
  • Thus ended the battle of El Alamein. This battle,
    coupled with the Axis defeats at Stalingrad and
    Midway, all of great significance, inspired the
    quote from Churchill, Before Alamein we never
    had a victory. After Alamein we never had a
    defeat All three of these major battles were
    essential in the eventual Axis defeat.
