2
OVERVIEW
  • A device which moves heat energy from one place
to another and from a lower to a higher
    temperature.
  • Heat is removed from ambient air or water, soil
or bedrock and delivered to where it is needed
  • In cooling applications, the reverse happens and
heat is removed, to be discharged to the ambient
    air, water, soil or rock.

3
COMPONENTS OF HEAT PUMP
  • A heat source and the means of extracting heat.
  • The circuit of working fluid within the heat
pump itself and a power source.
  • A distribution system to deliver the energy in
    the required form.

4
HEAT SOURCES
  • Heat from water
  • Air
  • The ground
  • Waste heat from industrial processes

5
HOW IT FUNCTIONS
  • A heat pump consists of four elements
    evaporator, compressor, condenser and expansion
    valve.
  • The working fluid changes from liquid to gas
(evaporates) as heat is absorbed from the heat
    source.
  • Working fluid condenses to liquid as heat is
released to where it is needed.

6
ADVANTAGES
  • Energy Efficient consume a little energy in
order to deliver three or four times as much
    energy as heat.
  • Environmental Heat pumps access renewable or
    waste energy
  • Physical No visible external equipment, no
external fans, quiet running, very little risk of
accidental damage, adaptable to many locations.

7
APPLICATION OF HEAT PUMPS
  • Some application of Heat pumps are
  • Air conditions
  • Refrigerators
  • Home thermostats
  • Car cooling systems
