Title: I84 Bicycle Path Connector
1I-84 Bicycle Path Connector
2The Dilemma Crossing Hwy 84
3The Two Current Crossings
Martin Luther King Boulevard NE 12th Street
4MLK is the most dangerous crossing. There is
no bike lane or shoulder. The design of the four
lane roadway encourages multiple lane changes and
high speed traffic.
5NE 12th Street is certainly a better crossing.
However there is a similar lack of distinct
bicycle allocation. Connection around the Lloyd
district to NE Portland streets remains sketchy.
Many commuters consider this to be an unpleasant
connection.
6Even NE 21st Street is not considered a safe
route by PDOT.This leaves a detour all the way
to 28th street for less experienced bicycle
commuters. The 28th street crossing is
considered the best means of crossing the highway.
7The SolutionBicycle connection along NE 7th
Street
8Currently traveling from NE 7th Street includes
pleasant bike lanes from Broadway to Lloyd Street
9Upon reaching Lloyd
One confronts Sullivan's Gulch
10Traveling from SE 7th Street includes similarly
pleasant bike lanes from Harrison St. to Sandy
11Upon reaching Pacific Street
One also confronts the impassible barrier.
12Roadways on either side of I-84 are comfortable
for bicycles. Leaving only one critical amenity
for safe bicycle commuting.
The I-84 Bicycle Bridge.

14Based on the design of the Powell crossing of the
I-205 path, this element would create a
convenient connection for bicycle commuters in
Portland.
15In order for the bridge to be as efficient as
possible, it is recommended that the deck be
treated as a roadway rather than a recreational
trail. To that end this bridge is designed with
separation of vehicular and pedestrian traffic as
well as a passing lane.
