Metabolic Syndrome and Serious Mental Illness

• Recent reports by the FDA, ADA, APA, AACE, and
  NAASO have raised concerns regarding obesity,
  diabetes, and dyslipidemia as adverse effects of
  atypical antipsychotic agents1
• In addition, the metabolic syndrome appears to be
  more common in patients with schizophrenia and
  bipolar disorder
• Monitoring is now recommended1,2
