Title: What are the challenges of making the flu vaccine

1
  • What are the challenges of making the flu vaccine?

2
  • Why does it take so long?

3
  • What significant contributions might
Biotechnology make to the process of making
    vaccines?

4
  • What is Biotechnology?

5
Biotechnology
  • The use of cellular and biomolecular processes to
solve problems or make useful products.
  • BIO (Biotechnology Industry Organization)

6
MA Standards
  • Biotechnology
  • Biotechnology is a rapidly expanding field of
biology that uses a growing set of techniques to
derive valuable products from organisms and their
cells. Biotechnology is already commonly used to
identify potential suspects or exonerate persons
wrongly accused of crimes, determine paternity,
    diagnose diseases, make high-yield pest-resistant
crops, and treat genetic ailments. Educators
should recognize the importance of introducing
students to biotechnology so that they may better
understand the molecular basis of heredity and
critically evaluate the benefits and risks of
    this technology.

7
  • What is the connection between spiders and
    biotechnology?

Transformation Animation DNA interactive (DNAi)
http//www.dnai.org Great source of information
about all things DNA. Has good animations as
well. To view animation on transformation,
click on "manipulation" at top menu, then on
"techniques", then transferring and sorting",
then "transformation"
16
pGAL
  • Contains gene for b galactosidase
  • Contains gene for amplicillin resistance

17
Transformation with pGAL
  • b galactosidase cleaves artificial substrate to
    form a blue product
  • Transformed colonies appear blue
