What is it

• An avalanche is a cause of snow falling down a
  mountain which the causes can be loose snow, or
  starts in a single point of Slab Avalanche and
  may have a thick layer of neve(old refrozen
  snow).

How and Why it Starts

• Several factors may affect the likelihood of an
  avalanche, including weather, temperature, slope
  steepness, slope orientation (whether the slope
  is facing north or south), wind direction,
  terrain, vegetation, and general snowpack
  conditions.

Where and When it Happens

• Although avalanches can occur on any slope given
  the right conditions, in the United States
  certain times of the year and certain locations
  are naturally more dangerous than others.
  Wintertime, particularly from December to April,
  is when most of avalanches will slide down a
  slope.

Prevention and Protection

• If you are in a snow storm and are near a
  mountainous area, RUN! You will have to fasten
  all your clothing tightly, loosen your pack and
  remove your ski pole straps. You want to fasten
  your clothing so no snow will come in. Loosen
  your pack or backpack so you can easily slip out
  of it.
