6
My God, my God
  • At a time when Jesus is suffering the penalty
for the sins of the world, He addresses His
    Father like mankind
  • At Golgotha the love of God in Jesus is
outpoured with great clarity toward the lost
  • At the cross Gods awesome holiness and
everlasting love collide and now we can be
    redeemed

7
My God, my God
  • The first 3 cries from the cross were shouted
in daylight, but now nature covers its Creator
    in darkness (Matt. 2745)
  • We need to be careful that we view the Father
as loving as He places His Son in this dark
    situation (Is. 534,10)
  • Indeed, the Bible reveals that the Father and
the Son did all of this out of love for all
    mankind (Jn. 316 Lk. 178)

8
My God, my God
  • The Father never made the Son bear anything
reluctantly, nor did the Son extract from the
Father a salvation He was reluctant to bestow
  • The Father and the Son took the initiative of
redemption together (John 1017-18 Rom. 832)
  • Whatever happened at the cross was agreed upon
by both the Father and the Son (John 1232-33)

9
My God, my God
  • All mankind had did their part in sinning and
    putting Jesus on the cross
  • Satan did his work by bruising the seed of
    woman and displaying hostility
  • The Son did His work by giving Himself as a
sacrifice to die, the just for the unjust that
He might bring us to God (I Peter 318)

10
My God, my God
  • God does His work by bringing us to Himself
through His Son in the gospel (II Thess. 213-17)
  • On the day of the crucifixion of Jesus the
Father would finalize the Divine plan for
    salvation in paying for sin
  • When the darkness of judgment covered the cross
and Jesus was bearing all of the sins of the
world, God turned away from the sinful scene

11
why have You forsaken Me
  • As Jesus became sin on the cross, light fled
from the sky until after He died
  • God can have no fellowship with the darkness of
sin, and that day on the cross, the sins of the
world were laid on Jesus, His Son (I John 15-7)
  • In Gethsemane, Jesus is strengthened for the
duty at hand. At Golgotha He is left to fulfill
    that duty (Mt. 2636-39)

12
why have You forsaken Me
  • Forsaken is a powerful word (man- friend /
    husband-wife / etc.)
  • This Son cherished the love and fellowship of
His Father from all eternity and in the moment
that He bore our sins, He drank the cup that
separated Him from the holy Father
  • By crying, My God, My God we see that Jesus
still realized the hope of being with His Father
    (Lk. 2346)

13
why have You forsaken Me
  • The withdrawal of the Fathers presence was not
the withdrawal of His love for Jesus
  • When we are suffering do we have a cry that
longs for God in the moment of our distress
  • God the Father had indeed withdrawn from Him
for His holiness, but God the Son still cleaved
    to His Father. (Psalm 221-3, 9-11, 19)

15
why have You forsaken Me
  • Jesus took on an eternity of hells punishment
in 6 hours when He accepted the sins of the world
  • Jesus bore the darkness of our penalty in hell
when He hung on the cross, so that we could
    enter the light
  • Look at the hours spent on the cross and you
are looking at hell (darkness, loneliness, and
    abandonment by God)

16
why have You forsaken Me
  • The purpose of the cross was not only for us,
but was also for God the Father (Eph. 52)
  • We needed to be justified in the sight of the
Lord our God and Jesus takes care of our
    justification (Rom. 325)
  • God passed over those who had the blood of the
Passover Lamb upon their house, He will pass
over those who have the blood of Christ (Ex.
    1213)

17
Application
  • Let us remember that the lesson is, Jesus was
forsaken by God that we might be accepted (Heb.
    135)
  • Now that Christ has died, those who come in
trusting faith to Him will never be separated
    from Him (Rom. 835-39 81)
  • The only way now to be forsaken by God and His
Son is to reject the gospel (II Thess. 17-9
    Matt. 723)

18
Application
  • A song that I have recorded has a stanza that
    reads

And can it be that I should gain An interest in
the Saviors blood? Died He for me, who caused
His pain For me, who Him to death
pursued? Amazing love! How can it be That You,
my God, should die for me?
19
Will you be forsaken or accepted by Jesus?
  • Hear (John 1248)
  • Believe (John 824)
  • Repent (Luke 133, 5)
  • Confess (Matt. 1032-33)
  • Baptized (Mark 1616)
  • Faithful (Rev. 210)
