Multi-pronged Approach (1) (London)
  • Individual DOMs
  • Test communications, firmware (MOAT, STF,
    flasherboard testing, DAQ and TestDAQ)
  • Can use external LC trigger source to study
    single DOMs easily
  • Multiple DOMs
  • All of the above. Test LC triggering between
    DOMs.
  • Test absolute timing using fast LED external
    light source
  • Multiple DOMs on long quads of different lengths
  • Test timing accuracy using external fast LED
    light source (optical fibers).
  • Test Local Coincidence
  • This represents a realistic InIceIceTop testing
    platform
  • DOMs in freezer
  • Test DOM performance at cold temperatures, like
    at pole
  • Commercial Air quote is for 23k and will hold
    32 DOMs
  • Freezer reduces noise rates to something similar
    to south pole
  • DOMCal testing works much better at cold
    temperatures
  • Supernova trigger could be much more
    realistically tested on SPTS with a freezer
  • Temperature problems could be uncovered (FATs

Multi-pronged Approach (2) (London)
  • S3 Simulated Stimulus Source (Kael) rack of
    mainboards with programmable FPGA signal
    generator to simulate entire strings
  • Programmable external pulse injector to simulate
    both physics signals and PMT glass background,
    just like at pole.
  • Will likely want to expand this to several
    strings next year since it should prove to be
    extremely useful
  • S-Cube is being built, FPGA design has already
    been simulated and shown to work by Nobuyoshi
  • DOMHub simulators
  • Initially three servers to simulate 12 strings
  • Using prerecorded data or physics simulations
  • Eventually, want to simulate all 80 strings

How to accomplish the goal
  • Hardware
  • Remove dependency on a large freezer (DFL)
    Purchase a freezer for SPTS.
  • Remove dependency on PCTS Purchase long quads
    for SPTS.
  • Software
  • Use SPTS as the gateway to check out all code
    before moving it to the pole.

SPTS Enhancements
  • LED light source for time resolution, rate and
    LC tests being used
  • DOMHub Simulators to simulate multiple strings
    these exists (unused so far)
  • S-Cube to simulate pole trigger conditions,
    initially for most of one string in progress
