  • The simple predicate, or verb, may consist of two
    or more words. These words are called a verb
    phrase.

  • A verb phrase is made up of a main verb and one
    or more helping verbs.
  • A main verb can stand by itself as a predicate of
    a sentence.
  • A helping verb helps the main verb express action
    or shows time.

  • Sentences can sometimes have 2 subjects or 2
    predicates. This is called compound.

  • Ex Tornadoes and Hurricanes are scary storms.

  • A sentence can be used to make a statement, to
    ask a question, to make a request, to give a
    command, or to show strong feeling.

  • A declarative sentence makes a statement and
    always ends with a period.
  • Ex I went to Hawaii this summer.
  • Ex There are many things to do on a Saturday.

  • An interrogative sentence asks a question. It
    always ends with a question mark.

  • Ex Are we almost done taking notes?

  • An imperative sentence tells someone to do
    something.
  • Ex Have your homework ready for me to pick up.
  • Ex Come pick me up on your way to the movies

  • An exclamatory sentence shows strong feeling
    always ends with an exclamation point.
  • Ex You are so lucky!
  • Ex These notes are so long!

  • Most of the time, the subject comes before the
    verb. Sometimes, however, the subject is in an
    unusual place.

  • In a question, the subject usually comes after
    the verb, or between parts of the verb phrase.
  • Ex Are you going home right after school today?
  • Ex When will Katie come over?

  • The subject of a command, or imperative sentence,
    is usually YOU. Often, the subject is not written
    because it is implied.
  • Ex Come to school in your game jerseys. (implied
    you)
  • Ex (You) Be sure to have fun this weekend!

  • In some sentences starting with here or there,
    the subjects follow the verbs.
  • Ex There is the national championship team!
