Rotary Club Costalegre
Our founding members
The Costalegre Rotary Club is in its 2nd year and
boasts over 40 members. Many members are 6 month
residents (in the winter months) and the
full-timers number over 20. Largely a group of
retired expats and we have many couples in our
club.

Escuela Primaria Urbana Miguel Lopez de Legazpi
Rotary Club Costalegre
February 2008 Our very first request for
assistance came from an elementary school in
Barra de Navidad. We were asked to give 32
six-year-olds more protection from the
elements. A project cost of 3000.00 pesos
purchased and installed an outdoor canopy for the
school to create a temporary classroom..

Escuela Primaria Urbana Lazaro Cardenos
Rotary Club Costalegre
June 2008 School teachers and their students in
the tiny village of Lazaro Cardenas asked the
club for new curtains in a classroom. Glare from
the sun made reading computer screens
difficult. A project cost of 1000.00 pesos
purchased fabric and hardware.

June 2008 Club members purchased and fabricated
the shades and some of the guys loaded up their
tools for another exercise in group
installation. The men reported no lasting
injuries and the school had their new curtains.

Rotary Club Costalegre
Ballet Folklorico Xalixco Barra de Navidad
March 2008 For 2 years the club has donated a
total of 5000.00 pesos to the Ballet Folklorico
de Xalixco. The money helps purchase the many,
many yards of costume fabric. This group teaches
over 60 children traditional dance, as well as
every day values like punctuality, staying in
school, completing homework, cooperation, etc.

Rotary Club Costalegre
Escuela Primaria El Rebalse Cihuatlan
November 2008 Deep in the banana and coco
plantations, the small village of Rebalse asked
for assistance at their primary school.
14
Rotary Club Costalegre
Escuela Primaria El Rebalse Cihuatlan
November 2008 The children would dip a bucket in
their cistern for flush water, having to reach
around a pump with a dangerous short in the
wiring.

November 2008 The Club replaced the upper water

March 2009 The Club has acted as a clearing
house for good, used equipment. An HP Laser
printer donated by a Rotary member was a welcome
gift to this school. Printers, DVD players, TVs
and used wheelchairs have been placed through
successful networking.

December 2008 This new wheelchair was delivered
to Berta Gomez for the Central de Salud (free

Chili Cook-Off Fund Raiser 2008
Our club has raised money by hosting two auctions
and two Chili Cook-Offs. The Chili Cook-Offs
have been able to draw in many contestants not
regularly involved with Rotary. We were on our
own the first year, but had two great sponsors
the next time around. El Jimador Tequila and Sol
Beer helped cover many expenses, and participants
donated their chili and salsas.
21
Rotary Club Costalegre
Chili Cook-Off Fund Raiser 2009
While the kids from the Ballet Folklorico danced
in the square, beer sales fell through the floor
until they were finished.
22
Rotary Club Costalegre
Chili Cook-Off Fund Raiser 2009
The accessory team sold tee shirts, aprons,
shopping bags and can cozies, giving the beer
tent a challenge for the largest profit-center of
the event.
23
Rotary Club Costalegre
Chili Cook-off Fund Raiser 2008
A Food Network star, Guy Fieri, attended our
second Cook-Off and was not to be upstaged by
co-chair and Rotary member, Carri Leroux. It was
very clear his fingers were faster than hers
24
Rotary Club Costalegre
Chili Cook-off Fund Raiser 2008
We had winners for 2008, and very pretty prizes.
25
Rotary Club Costalegre
Chili Cook-off Fund Raiser 2009
And some entrants managed to get back in the
winners circle the next time around. All
proceeds from these fund raisers are spent in our
surrounding communities. All our projects have
been requested by our local schools, health
clinics, and other organizations. We endeavour
to continue this rapid response to small requests
while we develop larger projects and programs.

Escuela Primaria Urbana Miguel Lopez de Legazpi
Rotary Club Costalegre
The Costalegre Rotary Club is now proposing to
build a new classroom at Escuela Primaria Urbana
Miguel Lopez Legazpi, where we first provided a
temporary shelter. The Principal indicated that
the shade tent eventually proved unworkable and
the children were squeezed into existing space
with others. We want to build the children a
good room. We have great cooperation from
parents in the effort, including planning and
labour for construction. We need your help!
28
Rotary Club Costalegre
Asilo de Ancianos Cihuatlan, Jalisco
The home for the elderly in Cihuatlan submitted a
request for some major improvements! We
need your help!
