Title: The ESL Corner

1

The ESL Corner Everyone is very excited about
our new FOSS science study on Plants and Animals.
Grass seems to be growing both indoors and out
in Grade 1! The ESL team has posted new
vocabulary for the science and math units in
addition to some areas of focus in the study of
high frequency words and word family studies.
Please be sure to check out these new word lists
on the second page of this powerpoint. Page 3
offers 3 new activities that you can use when
working with the new vocabulary at home. Please
read the directions carefully. As we shared in
our workshop, we focus on some words (word
families / high frequency words) to learn how to
spell and we focus on other vocabulary words
(science / math) to understand the content we
learn in school. Learning about math and science
words is best done with the support of visuals.
Using hands-on activities, like the ones we have
provided, offer the best avenue for acquiring
new knowledge. We hope that you all enjoy this
new unit. Please contact us if you have any
questions. - Ms Chen and Ms Blais

Activities
Back WritingEach player takes turns writing a
word, letter by letter, on a partners back.
Just pull a sight word, word family or science
picture out of a bag and copy the word on your
partners back using your finger. See if they
can guess the correct word!
Word FindEach night that you read your library
book, see how many words you can find from the
word list. Choose a word family
(-ack/-eck/-ick/-ock/-uck) OR a sight word to
focus on. Just 1 word family or 1 sight word at
a time please! Count how many times you find it.
You can even make a bar graph for each night to
keep track of the words you hunt for!
  • Clay Creations
  • You will need clay for this one! Pull a
vocabulary word out of the bag and say it aloud
to your partner. It is your partners job to use
the clay to spell it out. Remember, this is for
words we practice spelling, NOT science or math
    words!
