2
What Canola means to Canada
  • 3.4 billion for growers in 2007, Canadas
    largest cash crop by value
  • Adds 14 billion to the Canadian economy, and

Potential Biodiesel Production from Canadian
Feedstock Sources2007 to 2010
6
Why Canola Biodiesel?
  • High value
  • Excellent cold flow properties - Lowest saturated
fat content of any available feedstock (7).
    Remember the Canadian climate.
  • Good oxidative stability

7
Quality Canola, grown in Canada
  • Can produce biodiesel which meets both ASTM D
6751 and European EN 14214 quality specifications
  • Feedstock has proven itself in the EU! In 2004
EU produced and consumed 1.65 Billion liters of
    biodiesel mainly from rapeseed/canola feedstock.

8
What can Biodiesel mean to Canola in Canada?
  • 1 bushel of Canola will produce 10 litres of
    biodiesel
  • B2 Blend 680,000 tonnes of Canola (by 2012)
  • B5 Blend 2,600,000 tonnes of Canola (by 2015?)

9
Food vs. Fuel Debate
  • Biofuel has been made a culprit, but we dont
see it as a major factor responsible for high
    food prices.
  • UN Food and Agriculture Organization, April 2008

10
What are the factors?
  • Energy prices
  • Climate change
  • Food consumption changes

Putting cost into perspective...
  • Canola 14.00/bu
  • Margarine 5.46/2lb tub
  • Canola 21.00/bu
  • Margarine 5.95/2lb tub
