• Materials
• Pencil
• Scotch Tape
• Filter Paper
• Plastic Cup
• Isopropyl Alcohol
• Marker (Green or Blue)

Separating Mixture Lab

• Directions
• 1. Tape one end of the filter paper to the
  pencil.
• 2. Place the pencil over the cup so that it is
  resting on each side and the filter paper is
  hanging down in the cup.
• 3. Roll up the filter paper until just the bottom
  of the filter paper is just barely touching the
  bottom of the cup.
• 4. Retape the filter paper on the pencil at this
  point.
• 5. Make a line with a marker on the filter paper
  about 2 cm from the bottom of the filter paper.
  Then hang the filter paper back in the cup.
• 6. Pour in the isopropyl alcohol in the cup up to
  1 cm.
• 7. Let set and record results.

• Questions
• Draw a picture of your lab set up before the
  isopropyl alcohol was absorbed by the filter
  paper.
• Draw a picture of both of the filter papers and
  what happened after the isopropyl alcohol was
  absorbed up the filter papers.
• 3. Based on these results who is the cookie
  culprit? What led you to this conclusion?

The Cookie Culprit

• Early this morning a note was left at the door of
  the world cookie factory saying that by noon
  tomorrow all the cookies in the world would be
  gone and never be seen again.
• The investigators have narrowed the search to two
  suspects and they need your help in proving which
  one it was.
