What is a METAPHOR?
  • Sometimes a comparison is made by speaking of one
thing as if it were another. This is called a
    metaphor.
  • Metaphors compare things that are not very
    similar.

5
METAPHOR EXAMPLE
  • The comedian was a barrel of laughs.
  • Roger is a racehorse.
  • My brother is a clown.

  • The Moons the North Winds cookie,
  • He bites it day by day,
  • Until theres but a rim of scraps
  • That crumble all away.
  • The South wind is a baker.
  • He kneads clouds in his den,
  • And bakes a crisp new Moon.
  • That greedy North wind eats again!

REVIEW
  • A metaphor is another figure of speech.
  • A metaphor is also a comparison of two things
that are not usually considered alike.
  • This type of comparison does not use the words
    like or as.
  • For example, My room is a garbage can.

8
Project Part one.
  • On your own or in a small group write a short
poem comparing two things that are not alike.
  • Example,
  • The ship plows the seas,
  • For the mariner to please,
  • The ocean is a field,
  • For all the world to yield.

9
PROJECT PART TWO
  • Present your poem to the class.
  • Inquire the following information from the class
    during your presentation.
  • How many metaphors did you find?
  • Explain two things being compared.
  • Describe the event within the poem.

10
Teacher
  • Students can prepare their poems on a
    transparency to present to class.
  • Poster boards would also be useful.
  • If you laminate the blank poster board students
can write on it then erase for future use.
  • Use a dry erase marker.
