Why non-chemical?

• ?Pesticides have proved to be, in the short-term,
  ideal products for chemical companies
• They are high income-generating agents
• The extension agent is often the same as the
  pesticide salesman
• They eliminate their own competition (beneficial
  insects)!
• ?They have proved to be real disasters in the
  long term, for the communities and farmers
• A ruined or degraded environment, residual
  toxicity, high mortality rates
• Financial ruin or heavy costs
• Increased pest infestation and reduced
  biodiversity
• Loss of control over management decisions
  regarding their agroecosystems

Why Community Management?

• The new approach is showing itself to be
• Related to poverty eradication
• Returning control not only to the farmers as
  individuals, but also to the community as a
  holistic entity and support system
• Making use of traditional knowledge and wisdom of
  management
• Able to relate to community sandouqs (investment
  funds)

• - Pest is a relative term
• Eradication does not make sense
• It is a question of sharing resources to our
  advantage
• Agro-ecosystem management is the name of the
  game
