Title: Long%20haul%2010G%20Ethernet

1
Long haul 10G Ethernet
  • Dark fiber tests in Denmark
  • Presented by Mikkel Olesen, CERN

2
  • Part of the IST ESTA project (Ethernet Switching
    at 10G and Above)
  • Project members
  • COM institute at Technical University of
    Denmark
  • CERN in Geneva
  • BATM in Israel

3
Agenda
  • Goals
  • DAREnet dark fibers in Denmark
  • Equipment
  • Lab experiments at COM/DTU
  • Field tests, used setups and results
  • Conclusion
  • Future work and use
  • Questions?

4
Goals
  • Examine the possibility to use standard 10G
Ethernet LAN equipment for long-haul WAN
    transmission
  • Using DAREnets 250km SMF link between Odense and
    Lyngby
  • If possible find a setup that has a BER below
1E-12 which is the 802.3ae objective
  • Use standard NICs and aggregating switch's to
verify link with real Ethernet traffic
  • Measure the setups power penalty

5
DAREnet fiber in Denmark
  • The 252 km of standard SMF dark fiber between
    Odense and Lyngby
  • Includes three points for possible amplification,
filtering etc. in Nyborg, Næstved and Taastrup

6
Equipment
  • BATM T6 switch
  • Including 10G Uplink module developed at CERN as
    part of ESTA
  • Optillion TOP 5010-SC Xenpak transceiver
  • 1550 nm optics with maximum reach of 40 km
  • Includes IEEE802.3-2000 PMD BIST capability for
    BER measurements
  • Optical amps and filters

7
COM lab setup
8
Field tests - 1
  • Setup using pre-amp at receiver
  • 4 amps in total per link
  • 3 x 80 km DCF (Dispersion Compensating Fiber)
  • Achieved BER lt1E-15 !
  • Limited by time shortage

9
BER curves
10
Field tests - 2
  • Setup without using pre-amp at receiver
  • 3 amps in total per link
  • 3 x 80 km DCF
  • Achieved BER lt1E-12
  • Shortage of time limited the experiments on this
setup, BER could likely be improved

Conclusion
  • Successfully used standard 10G Ethernet LAN
equipment to transmit over 250km of SMF dark
fiber (including optical amplification and DCF)
  • Setup meets 802.3ae objective with a BER of
1E-12, best result is below 1E-15
  • Transmitted full-duplex 8 Gb/s real Ethernet
    traffic using 16 x 1 Gb/s NICs and aggregating
    switch's
  • Measured setup power penalty at 1E-12 to be 2.5
    dB

14
Conclusion cond.
  • The successful results prove the possibility to
use low-priced Ethernet LAN equipment for
    long-haul connections

15
Future work and use
  • Initial tests show the possibility to extend the
    reach even further
  • Experiments could for example make use of the
dark fibers continuing to Århus and Aalborg
  • A 10 Gb/s link between SDU in Odense and DTU in
Lyngby could for example be valuable as a
    GRID-to-GRID connection

16
Questions?
17
Back-to-back sensitivity measurement
  • Used to determine the power penalty for the
    demonstrated setup
