• Students must avoid damage to their eyes by
  wearing protective safety glasses when
• Working with machinery or hand power tools eg.
  Drilling
• Working with dangerous chemicals e.g. acids,
  catalysts, glues
• Working with heat/fire equipment eg. Soldering,
  oxy-acetylene
• Working with electric welding equipment eg. Arc,
  MIG welding

FINGERS

• Students can avoid damage or cuts to fingers by
• Being aware of where they are and what they are
  doing in relation to potential danger eg.
  bandsawing
• Keeping them behind the sharp edge of tools eg.
  chisels
• Wearing the appropriate gloves when handling hot
  materials or dangerous chemicals eg. Super gluing

HAIR

• Long hair must be tied back to avoid
• Being caught in spinning machinery eg. Power
  drill press, wood lathe turning
• Catching alight when using heat/fire equipment
  eg. LPG gas torch

FEET

• Closed in footwear is essential to protect feet
  from
• Sharp falling tools or materials eg. Chisel,
  sheet metal
• Heavy falling tools or materials eg. Hammer,
  solid steel bar
• Hot falling tools or materials eg. soldering
  iron, hot metal casting

HEARING

• Protective muffs should be worn to prevent
  hearing loss from
• Excessively noisy power tools eg. Router, angle
  grinders
• Excessively noisy machinery eg. Radial arm saw
  cutting

LUNGS

• An appropriate mask or air filter unit should be
  worn to prevent dizziness or damage to lungs when

• Students are to do some form of maintenance
• Each week eg. Sharpening a chisel
• Each term eg. Lubricating a vice
• Each year eg. Repainting tool handles

CORRECT USE OF TOOLS

• Students should not use any tool unless
• They know the correct name of the tool
• They know what the tool is used for
• They have had instruction on how to use the tool
  correctly
