• Brainwashing
• A common practice in Imperial China, according to
  OBrien
• Brainwashing comes from literal translation of
  Chinese xi nao
• Chinese Communists used brainwashing techn. When
  they came to pr in 49 to reeducate resisting
  intellectuals
• Also brainwashed POWs in Korean War (50-53)
• Follows 2-step process confession reeducation
• During the 13th 15th Centuries, the Catholic
  Church used brainwashing to conduct the
  Inquisition against heretics

• The Last Man
• Orwell almost titled his novel The Last Man in
  Europe, based on OBriens remark to Winston,
  You are the last man. You are the guardian of
  the human spirit.
• Plot Structure
• In Pt 3, the climax occurs in Ch. V at the moment
  that OBrien presses the first of two levers on
  the rat cage.
• After Winston reacts instinctively to save
  himself Do it to Julia! Not me! the tension
  suddenly eases. This shift in the plot is called
  the falling action, or resolution.
