Interview
  • Hillary What made you want to play the
    trumpet?
  • Mr. Dubose I just liked the sound of it playing
so when I was ten years old I started taking
private lessons and Ive been playing ever
sincewhich is about 50 yearsha so its been a
    long time.
  • Hillary What was your most memorable experience
    at Greenville High?
  • Mr. Dubose Definitely being a part of the
bandI loved playing at the school events.
  • Hillary What made you want to go into music
    conducting as an official career?
  • Mr. Dubose I actually had my first conducting
experience at GHS so as a senior I realized this
is what I wanted to do. From there I went to
Furman and then UGA for music history and
    advanced music conducting classes.
  • Hillary Where did your career take you after
    college?
  • Mr. Dubose I entered into the United States
Army Orchestra and from there I was sent to Fort
McPherson, GA to conduct for them. I have also
played in every inauguration from Jimmy Carter to
Bill Clinton so that was definitely a highlight
    of my career.

9
Interview (continued)
  • Hillary What are you doing currently?
  • Mr. Dubose Well, I retired in 2000 so now I am
currently helping school students with music and
I also play for my church, First Presbyterian of
Marietta. Just today I conducted a concert for
the community so I am still very active as a
    music director.
  • Hillary What is the most exotic place your
    career has taken you?
  • Mr. Dubose Oh definitely Moscow. In 1987,
Ronald Reagan went for a Summit meeting with
Gorbachev, when Russia was still the Soviet Union
so that was a little unnerving, but Reagan took
12 people from the Army strings, including me,
and we played for the state dinner hosted by
Reagan for the Soviet Union. I also went to
England, Scotland and Canada but Moscow was by
far the most exotic place I ever went during my
    career.
  • Hillary Have you been back to visit Greenville
    High?
  • Mr. Dubose Actually I have not, but I
definitely would like to because the Wall of Fame
was built and dedicated while I was in Moscow and
then I heard that the school was totally gut and
rebuilt from the inside out and it would be
interesting to see what it looks like now
considering how long its been since Ive been
    there.
