HDTV to become the norm, particularly with the
shift to digital TV. - HD content viewing is possible on many computers
today. With a video resolution of up to 1080p
(approximately six times the resolution of
today's DVD video) Microsoft Windows Media 9
Series (WMV HD) titles provide a visually
stunning experience on Windows XP-based PCs.
4The HD experience a revolution in digital
entertainment
- What does HD mean?
- Quite simply, HD means a revolution in the home
cinema and digital entertainment experience is
underway. - Users want the thrill of lifelike realism and

movies, Internet, gaming and digital

- the home entertainment and the home cinema
experience.
5What is HD DVD? The future of digital
entertainment
- HD DVD is the next-generation DVD standard format
for high-definition storage, playback and
recording. - Like today's DVDs, HD DVD is 1.2 millimetres
thick, but it offers significantly more storage.
Triple-layer 45GB HD DVD is the maximum capacity. - HD DVD and DVD are fully compatible.
- Hybrid DVD and HD DVD discs will ensure an easy
technology transition. - HD DVD discs and HD DVD drives mean that
playback, content and storage of HD content will
become mainstream.
6How does HD DVD work? Blue laser technology
- HD DVD discs write data on a layer 0.6
millimeters from the surface, the same depth as
current DVDs. - Red laser (650 nanometers) is used for DVD today
by contrast HD DVD uses blue laser, which
operates at lower wavelengths (405 nanometers) - Why do nanometers matter? Shorter wavelengths
suffer less diffraction, which enables a tight
focus on the read-write surface. - Consequently, the blue laser technology allows
for more data to be stored on a disc of the
same diameter as todays standard DVD.
7How does HD DVD stack up against today's DVD
standard?
- HD DVD means...
- More than 3 times the storage capacity of
double-layer DVD. - The double-layer 30 GB HD DVD can store up to 8
hours of 1,125 scan line HD images, or up to 48
hours of 525 scan line SD images. - Higher-quality video and audio codecs
- Enables HDTV recording to disc
- Advanced content protection
8HD DVD storage capacities at a glance
Single-layer 4 hours of HD content
Dual-layer 8 hours of HD content
Triple-layer 12 hours of HD content
Triple-layer HD DVD is announced only at this
time.
9Why does HD DVD storage capacity matter?
- Why does storage capacity matter?
- HD DVD allows an entire high-definition movie to
be stored on the single side of a disc. - Uninterrupted viewing
- No need to turn over or change discs part way
through. This is why HD DVD storage capacity is
so important. - More digital content
