Funding
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 3.7 billion for
activities dedicated to energy efficiency and
conservation, including establishment of a
building performance initiative, authorization of
150 million in competitive grants for energy
efficiency initiatives, including green roofs,
and more.

The Countys funding came from the EPA through
the Virginia Department of Conservation and
Recreation. The Commonwealth received 400,000 in
2004.

What greenroofs improve.
The Chesapeake Bay
47
What greenroofs improve.
Sediment can smother benthic (bottom-dwelling)
plants and animals, such as oysters and clams.
Suspended sediment clouds the water, preventing
light from penetrating to the leaves and stems of
underwater grasses, or submerged aquatic
vegetation (SAV). High concentrations of toxic
materials also may be present in sediment, which
further contaminate waterways. Sediment carries
excess nutrients, particularly phosphorus, into
Bay waters, compromising water quality.
Accumulations of sediment can clog waterways and
ports, making traffic difficult or hazardous, and
requiring dredging.

52
Why should we construct greenroofs?
Just as trees and other plantlife clean air by
making use of airborne carbon, greenroofs do the
same thing recycling harsh roof microclimates
into living, breathing places.
53
Energy Consumption and Dependence
54
What greenroofs improve.
Energy Waste
55
Why should we construct greenroofs?
  • Our Energy comes with Costs.

56
When we increase efficiency.
  • We create real and long-term

57
ADAPTABILITY, VALUE, ECOLOGY and STABILITY
Greenroofs allow buildings to require and demand
less engergy. They make buildings less of an
energy hog
58
COUNTY DATA COLLECTION
Once the roof is established, the portion with
the green roof system will be monitored and
measured during an extended period and compared
to a similar, non-greened portion of the roof.
Mike Stumbaugh, Director of General Services
will use digital thermometers attached to micro
computers (called HOBOs) to measure and record
the changes in temperature from inside and out.
Coefficients of energy transfer will be used to
determine what the roof is doing.

59
COUNTY DATA COLLECTION
This will allow us to understand exactly how much
energy is conserved. County employees are certain
to hear a little less rumbling of air handlers
and chillers. County residents should not expect
their taxes to plummet as a result of our
increased efficiency, but over the life of the
roof, it will conserve energy that continues to
be more costly.
Similar studies will look at water quantity and
quality after the roof is complete.

Water Quality Plants and soil medium filter
airborne pollutants. The Department of Energy is
providing grant funding for greenroofs.
Greenroofs filter phosphorous and nitrogen, among
others from rainwater. and decrease the energy
(and therefor, pollution) required to keep us
comfortable.

72
Water Quality Phospherous and nitrogen are
bi-products of current regulations on coal and
other fossil fuel powered energy plants. In urban
areas, these airborne nutrients do not have an
opportunity to be cleaned through the natural
cycle as they would in more natural areas.

Water Quality Plants and soil medium work to
neutralize acid rain.

Water Quality Greenroofs have the ability to
remove and fitler phospherous, nitrogen, and
potentially mercury. These are all bi-products of
the department of energys current regulations on
coal and other fossil fuel powered energy plants.

Water Quantity On average, across the United
States, green roofs are shown to retain 50-70 of
water from rainfall events. Peak runoff flows are
reduced up to 85. These peak runoff flows are
responsible for the most severe erosion along our
rivers and streams. After full saturarion, a
greenroof will release rain in excess of one
inch, on average.

Costs
Costs for greenroof systems begin under 10 per
square foot... An extensive greenroff, such as
the one growing on the County Office Building is
the least expensive. Extensive greenroofs are not
meant to be an active space. They are limited
access and are to serve no greater function than
those previously mentioned. An Intensive
greenroof anticipates uses for relaxation and
reflection and involve larger plants, deeper soil
medium, and frequent use. Generally Extensive
roofs range between 5-15 per square foot for
system alone. As with any product that has more
to offer, intensive green roofs cost out higher,
but are still cost-effective.

State of Green in the Old Dominion Arlington
County has a two-year old green roof located near
Courthouse Metro. The City of Alexandria is
preparing to install the largest greenroof in the
Commonwealth 10,756 square feet.
