The Durham Project
  • Presented by

2
Introduction
  • The vision The 2005 University Master Plan sets
out an estates development vision to assist the
University in the delivery of its strategic aims
and provide an estate of high environmental
quality to support the Universitys academic
    business.
  • The objective to provide accommodation for the
    Universitys prestigious Durham Project, which
comprises a mixture of academic, administrative
and social space in refurbished units at Mountjoy
and on a new Gateway development site on Stockton
    Road.
  • This will result in improved facilities to
support the Universitys business and to enhance
    our students experience.

  • Creation of a new Law School and an extension to
    University library.

    re-configuration of Elvet Riverside.

Why move?
  • OBJECTIVES
  • Consolidate and enhance student services in
modern and accessible space, creating a
one-stop-shop. This will help with our
    competiveness in attracting students.
  • Deliver high-quality professional office
environments for the support services and evoke
new methods of working e.g. open plan and
    hot-desks.
  • Gateway - landmark building for the University
and the City, marking the entrance to the
University and creating a sense of arrival with a
reception servicing students, staff and visitors.
  • Relocation of the Law Department to create a
first-class home for the school and create
expansion space on Palace Green for Arts and
    Humanities.
  • Extension to University Library to house Law
collections and provide further capacity for the
development of the library in line with the
    Universitys Strategy.

5
Why move?
  • BENEFITS
  • Move towards more adaptable office environments
    at Mountjoy and Gateway.
  • Bespoke, energy efficient, design with capacity
for improved IT infrastructure and better
accessibility for staff, students and visitors.
  • Access to improved meeting space and high-quality
catering provision at the Science Site.
  • Modern approach to records management and
    archiving.
  • Bringing executive and central services closer to
the majority of academic departments and colleges
to engender better communications and working
    relationships.
  • Opportunity to dispose of less efficient and
unsuitable properties e.g. Old Shire Hall
    (recently sold to ONE).

6
Project governance
  • Programme Board chaired by the Vice-Chancellor
  • Steering Groups reporting to the Board to
facilitate user input and to manage issues for
each element of the project (Law, Gateway,
    Mountjoy, Library, Bailey/ER)
  • Project Support Team led by Programme Director,
    Trevor Armour (Estates Buildings)
  • Architects have been appointed for Mountjoy
refurbishment and PHP to lead on Gateway project
  • Plans informed by feedback from staff and student
surveys and developed in line with best practice
    in HE sector and beyond.
  • We are at an early, high-level stage of design
and consultation to refine development brief will
continue through your Heads of Departments (DSU
for students). This will be co-ordinated by The
Project Team and managed by the Steering Groups.
