• Growing Importance of India Social,
  Economic and Political
• New Curiosity about India IT,
  Environment, Development, Healthcare etc.
• Concept of Study Abroad growing in the
  West. but Asia is under represented
• Developed Country Students need information on
  India through short-term credit based courses
  information not available easily

  e.g gt 70,000 Indian Students in U.S
  only lt 1000 American Students in India
  gt3500 American Students in China
• Indian Universities can and should specially
  develop SAP
• SAP promotes mutual understanding it also
  generates revenues

• No database on SAPs in India
• Institute of International Education (IIE)
  www.iiepassport.org database exhaustive
• it surprises me to find only 37 programs for
  Study Abroad in India listed on
  www.iiePassport.org and it looks like only one of
  those was posted by an India based institution

• Most of the Programs initiated by U.S.
  universities IIE has offered to help India

Status of SAP in India

• Indigenous programs very few (e.g. Hyderabad,
  Delhi, Goa, Madras etc.)
• Interest growing with UGC initiative
  capability exists but special efforts needed
• Role played by AIIS, USEFI and CAE in promoting
  SAPs in India
• Private efforts of Dhvanyaloka Academy and
  Darpana Academy
• Immense potential for SAPs in India Strategy
  for promotion needed .Can UGC help ?

• SIP in Hyderabad University Early efforts by

• Interest, location and Expertise of Host
  Institution
• Expectations of the Faculty Innovation and
  Rigour (Need for Training ?)
• Defining Course Content Credit assignment

Future Opportunities for SAP

• Target at least 3000 students by 2008
• Long term involvement with NAFSA and IIE and use
  their large membership
• Set up an Association of International Educators
  in India
• Attracting Students from Asia and Pacific Region
• Evolve Study Abroad in Asia plan An
  initiative coordinated by India
