Ojibwe Clans - Doodem
The clan system was originally created to ensure
balance and harmony by developing a group to take
care of all the needs of the tribe. There were
six original tribes.

• Deer
• Turtle
• Crane/Loon
• Bear
• Marten

Deer - Waa-waash-ke-shi

• The Hoof clan members were the deer, moose, and
  caribou.
• Some people thought it was the moose and not the
  deer that were the leaders of this clan.

Turtle - mi-ki naak

• Turtles are known for being responsible and
  living long lives.
• Their determination allows them to achieve their
  goals.

Crane and Loon

Crane and Loon members were known for their loud
and clear voice, and recognized as famous
speakers.

• The Crane and Loon are leaders of all the clans.

Bear - Makwa

• Bear clan members were strong and steady.
• The No-ka or bear family has more people in it
  than any other Ojibway clan, forming one-sixth of
  the entire tribe.

Marten Waa-bi-zhe-shi

• The people of the Marten clan were hunters, food
  gathers and warriors of the Ojibwe.
• Tribal hunters were greatly respected.
