Tar This is a black, sticky substance. It clogs
the lungs and makes colds, bronchitis and lung
disease much more likely.

Hydrogen cyanide This is a poisonous gas. It was
used to execute prisoners in the USA! Smokers
breathe it in with every drag on a cigarette.

Carbon monoxide Red blood cells, like these,
pick up carbon monoxide rather than oxygen.
This means your blood carries less oxygen to the
cells in your body. This causes many problems -
especially for an unborn baby if the mother
smokes.

Nicotine Nicotine is a drug that acts directly on
the brain. It is the reason people find it
difficult to give up smoking. Nicotine is
addictive.

Carcinogens Chemicals that cause cancer are
called carcinogens. Tobacco smoke contains a lot
of carcinogens. More smokers than non-smokers
suffer from lung and throat cancers .
