2Updated Recycling Program for 2002 from Turtle
Island Recycling
- With the environment and operating costs in mind,
your building and property managers have
partnered with Turtle Island Recycling in order
capture all of your recyclable waste and prevent
it from reaching landfill. - The custodial staff are already onboard with new
procedures that have been explained and shown
through training sessions and now we are
requesting the help of the tenants to source
separate and help the buildings attain their
diversion goals. - Please join us in our goal to reduce costs and
help the environment by taking the time to learn
and implement the following changes.
3 Why Recycle?
- Using recycled material instead of virgin
resources when making new products is more energy
efficient. By avoiding the need to process raw
materials, industry is avoiding the most
energy-intensive and pollution-causing stage of
manufacturing. - Canadians throw out more per person than the
citizens of any other country in the world. Each
of us, on average, produces 1.7 kg of garbage/day
- roughly our body weight in a month! -
University of Waterloo, Alternatives Journal 2000 - The costs of dumping garbage are increasing - we
are shipping 137 truck loads to Michigan from
Toronto every day! And the paper, cans and glass
you recycle are worth money to manufacturers.
4Recycling Green Team Committee
- Meetings will be scheduled regularly and will
provide a forum for suggestion and comment. All
are welcome to attend. - Schedules and updates will be posted
electronically and sent to you periodically. - Our goal of an 80 diversion rate is only
attainable through your involvement and we
welcome your assistance.
5Paper Recycling
- Every time a ton of paper is recycled, 20 trees
are saved. - Municipal Waste Integration
Network, 2001 - Each person in an office discards on average 57
kilograms of waste paper each year. In fact,
enough recyclable paper is land-filled in Canada
each year that could have protected 80 Million
trees from being cut down. - Canadian Paper
Recyclers Ltd., 2000 - Making new cardboard from recycled cardboard
takes 25 less energy than using fibre from wood
preventing pollution! - Clean Calgary
Association, 2000 - Paper can easily be pulped, de-inked and used
again!
6Please help us recycle paper products by
- Not putting any other material, including
recyclables, in the PAPER ONLY blue box. - The recycling effort will be wasted if you do.
- Flatten and bundle your cardboard. Please affix a
waste sticker so that the cleaners know to take
it away.
7Bottles and Cans
- Recycling has many benefits beyond lower disposal
fees efficient resource management is key to
saving money and the environment. - Recycling steel cans saves water. It takes
223,500 litres of water to make one tonne of
steel. When scrap iron is used instead of iron
ore to make steel, water consumption is reduced
by 50 - Recycling Council of Ontario, WRW
handbook 2001 - Making aluminum from recycled material uses 95
less energy then from raw materials (bauxite).
One recycled pop can saves the equivalent of 11
litres of gasoline. Recycling a 6 pack is like
saving a full tank of gas! - Recycling Metal by
Joy Palmer, 1990
8Glass and Plastic
- Glass is 100 recyclable and can be used over and
over again. And when you think that the length
of time for a littered glass bottle to break down
by natural processes is 1 million years, you
realize why we have to recycle it. - Of the plastic bottles, PETE Bottles (1) is
the second most valuable commodity that you
recycle next to aluminium. Over 21,000 2-litre
pop cans can be made from one tonne of PET. The
most common use however is fabric - everything
from a cotton-like thread to fleece can be made
from PET.
9Recycling converts garbage to a valuable input
commodity
10All your bottles and containers can be co-mingled
in the recycling bins - well sort them for you!
- Turtle Island Recycling has a sorting line at
their facilities where the bottles and cans are
washed and sorted so that you can mix all your
glass, plastic, steel and aluminium containers
together in these tall recycling bins.
11Benefits to Tenants
- As the cost of dumping garbage increases for your
building and your company, you will continue to
cut costs by recycling. With landfills filled
and shipping costs to Michigan growing, there is
no question the price tag associated with garbage
disposal will only rise and these costs will be
transferred back to the tenants as the
cost-saving benefits of recycling also are! - The team effort involved in helping the
environment and avoiding wasteful corporate
practices helps build strong company morale. - Your buildings and companys reputation will be
protected when under the scrutiny of social
corporate responsibility and stewardship.
12- With your help in instituting these small
changes in your staffs daily routine we will
continue to save money and the environment by
diverting from landfill and saving these valuable
commodities. Through recycling you will have
reduced excess energy use and pollution and
slowed the extraction of raw material from the
earth. Thank you.
