Ecology
  • by Ellen Weigel and Carly Bice

2
Interdependence
3
Organization
  • Biosphere- the life zone of the Earth that
    includes all living organisms
  • Ecosystem- all of the organisms and the nonliving
environment found in a particular place
  • Community- all the interacting organisms living
    in an area
  • Population- all the members of a species that
live in one place at one time

4
Organization contd
  • Population- all the members of a species that
live in one place at one time
  • Organism- the simplest level of organization

5
Abiotic and biotic
  • Abiotic- the physical and chemical
    characteristics of the environment
  • Biotic- includes all the living things that
    affect organisms

6
Acclimation and adaptation
  • Acclimation- an organisms change in response to
a change in the organisms environment
  • Acclimation occurs within the lifetime of an
    organism.
  • Adaptation- an anatomical, physiological, or
behavioral trait that improves an organisms
    ability to survive and reproduce
  • Adaptation is genetic change in a species or
population that occurs from generation to
    generation over time.

7
Conformer and regulator
  • Conformer- organisms that do not regulate their
internal conditions instead, they change as their
    environment changes.
  • Ex Iguana- Iguanas control their body
temperature and activity state by varying its
    exposure to the sun.
  • Regulator- organisms that us energy to control
    some of their internal conditions
  • Humans- We regulate our body temperature, which
stays at around 98o no matter what the
    temperature is outside.

8
Dormancy and Migration
  • Dormancy- a long- term strategy to escape
unfavorable environmental conditions in which an
organism enters a state of reduced activity
  • Ex Venus fly traps enter a state of dormancy
in which they may look to be dead, but are
really just escaping from colder weather.
  • Migration- moving to a more favorable habitat in
    winter.
  • Ex Geese migrate to cooler places during
spring and summer and warmer places during fall

9
Niche-the way of life of a species in its
environment
  • Generalists are species that have a broad niche.
They can exist in many different local
    environments.
  • Specialist are species that have a narrow niche.
Specialists have fewer options for their
    environment than a generalist.

10
Producers- are plants capable of making their own
food using energy from the sun in a process
called photosynthesis.
ALGAE
WHEAT
11
Consumers- A consumer is the organisms that
obtain nutrients from other organisms.
  • Herbivores- animals that eat plants.
  • Carnivores- animals that eat other animals
  • Omnivores- animals that eat plants and animals
  • Detrivores- animals that eat the garbage of an
    ecosystem

12
Consumerscontd
  • Decomposers- break down dead plants and animals
  • Decomposers are similar to detrivores but
decomposers break down the dead organisms instead
    of just eating them.
  • Many decomposers are microscopic.

Thirstin's Water Cycle
The water cycle
- Water enters the atmosphere by evaporating
from the surface of bodies of water. The moisture
in the air begins to condense into clouds.
Eventually, the water in the clouds forms some
type of precipitation which falls back to the
Earth. This movement of water from the Earth to
the atmosphere is called the water cycle.
14
The carbon cycle
  • The Carbon Cycle is a complex series of
processes through which all of the carbon atoms
in existence rotate. Without the proper
functioning of the carbon cycle, every aspect of
    life could be changed dramatically.
